About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations

Also Saturday, Astros pitcher Justin Verlander maintains his second-place spot in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors. He also now has the 12th-highest single-season Box-Toppers point total (27.5) since 1995, when player tracking began.

In addition, Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu rises to 10th place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors.

Player of the Day—Hamels struck out eight over four scoreless innings, allowing two hits and no walks, in the 8-6 win over the Cardinals.

Hamels did not earn the win, picking up a no-decision, because even though the Cubs were in the lead when he exited, he did not pitch the required five innings to earn the win. Hamels was pitching limited innings after returning from injury. Though he did not pitch enough innings to earn the win, he did pitch at least three innings, the minimum to be automatically qualified to be considered as a Box-Toppers Player of the Game winner.

Hamels earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 9.7 for the season, 53rd among all players and 24th among National League pitchers.

In Hamels’ 14 consecutive seasons earning Box-Toppers points, he has earned 10 or more 12 times (including a record 11 seasons straight from 2006-2016). This is just the second time he will miss earning at least 10 points. The other time was 2017, he had 9.4 points with the Rangers. So in other words, he has 9.4 or more points for 14 straight seasons. He missed earning 10 points in two seasons and both by less than 1.0 point each time—in fact, by a combined 0.9 points (0.6 in 2017 and 0.3 in 2019).

*Current season

Verlander—Astros pitcher Justin Verlander maintains his second-place spot in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Saturday.

Verlander (6IP 4H 3R 0BB 12K W in the 6-3 win over the Angels) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 27.5 for the season. He trails overall leader and teammate pitcher Gerrit Cole (31.2) by 3.7 points. Verlander led player rankings much of the season but was decisively passed by Cole in early September with Cole clinching the Box-Toppers Player of the Year crown a week ago, on Sept. 22. Verlander ranks second to Cole both overall and among AL pitchers.

However, this is Verlander’s best season (his previous best was 2012 with the Tigers when he had 24.8 points, when he led all players) and his 27.5 points is the 12th-highest single-season point total since 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began. That point total would have been high enough to earn Box-Toppers Player of the Year honors in any of the three previous seasons from 2016-18. Cole, however, has the seventh-highest single-season point total since 1995 (31.2).

Verlander now has 205.6 career Box-Toppers points, fifth-most among all players since 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began. He trails fourth-ranked player and teammate Zack Greinke (207.1). Verlander ranks third among active players in career points, behind Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw (227.4) and Greinke.

Ryu—Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu rises to 10th place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Saturday.

Ryu (7IP 5H 0R 0BB 7K W in the 2-0 win over the Giants) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 17.4 for the season. He ranks fourth among NL pitchers.

Notable—Mets pitcher Steven Matz becomes the 50th player in 2019 to reach 10 Box-Toppers points after earning Player of the Game honors Saturday.

Matz (6IP 2H 0R 5BB 7K W in the 3-0 win over the Braves) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 10.0 for the season, 49th among all players and 21st among NL pitchers.

This is Matz’s second season with 10 or more points. In 2016, he had 12.1 points with the Mets, 32nd among all players and 17th among NL pitchers.

Debut—Two players made their Box-Toppers debut Saturday, each with their first career Player of the Game honor:

  • Adam Haseley of the Phillies (3-4 R 2BI in the 9-3 win over the Marlins) made his Major League debut June 4 and was playing in his 66th career game.

  • Richie Martin of the Orioles (HR 2B 2-4 2R 2BI in the 9-4 win over the Red Sox) made his Major League debut March 28 and was playing in his 119th career game.

Scoring—Hamels earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Lopez earns 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day. Walker and Odor each earn 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Saturday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
