About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations

Small sample size.

These are the operative words when describing the 2020 Major League Baseball season, shortened from 162 to 60 games by the global coronavirus pandemic.

Looking at statistics from the past regular season seems incomplete—it was only about one-third of a normal season, after all.

So this year, looking at Box-Toppers All-Star teams for 2020 also seems incomplete. For added context, Box-Toppers is also looking at the All-Star teams over the past two seasons.

The American League and National League All-Star teams for both the 2020 and 2019-20 seasons are composed of the players with the highest Box-Toppers point totals by position in each league over those two time frames. In addition to the batters are the top four starting pitchers in each league and the top closing pitcher. (Normally, there would be no designated hitter All-Star spot for NL teams, but because the DH rule was used in the NL for the 2020 season, we use it here for both seasons’ NL All-Star teams.)

Top AL pitcher for 2020: Shane Bieber

Indians pitcher Shane Bieber led all players in 2020 Box-Toppers points (11.4) and is the top starting pitcher on Box-Toppers’ AL All-Star team for 2020. Bieber is one of 10 players to make Box-Toppers’ All-Star teams for both 2020 and 2019-20. He is the second-ranked AL pitcher on the 2019-20 AL All-Star team with 29.5 Box-Toppers points over the past two seasons (he had 18.1 points in 2019).

Top AL pitcher for 2019-20: Gerrit Cole

Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole led all players in Box-Toppers points over the past two seasons with 39.6 and is the top starting pitcher on the AL All-Star team for 2019-20. Cole had 32.2 Box-Toppers points in 2019 (first among all players) and 7.4 in 2020, which was fifth among AL pitchers, just short of the top four to make the 2020 AL All-Star team.

Top NL pitcher for 2020: Trevor Bauer

Reds pitcher Trevor Bauer led all NL players in 2020 Box-Toppers points (10.0) and is top starting pitcher on Box-Toppers’ NL All-Star team for 2020. He is the second-ranked NL pitcher on the 2019-20 All-Star team with 24.1 Box-Toppers points over the past two seasons.

Top NL pitcher for 2019-20: Jacob deGrom

Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom led all NL players in Box-Toppers points over the past two seasons with 27.8 (fourth-most overall, behind Cole, Bieber and Astros pitcher Justin Verlander) and is the top starting pitcher on the NL All-Star team for 2019-20. He is also the fourth-ranked NL pitcher on the 2020 All-Star team with 8.7 points this past season.

Top AL batter for 2020: Luke Voit

Top AL batter for the past season is Luke Voit of the Yankees with 6.0 Box-Toppers points, ranked 22nd overall. He is AL All-Star first baseman for 2020.

Top AL batter for 2019-20: Nelson Cruz

Top AL batter for the past two seasons is Nelson Cruz of the Twins with 15.5 Box-Toppers points (12.5 in 2019 and 3.0 in 2020). He is AL All-Star designated hitter for 2019-20.

Top NL batter for 2020 and 2019-20: Marcell Ozuna

Top NL batter for the both the past season and past two seasons is Marcell Ozuna of the Braves. Ozuna has led NL batters for two straight seasons with 12.0 in 2019 (when he was with the Cardinals) and 4.5 in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. Ozuna serves as top-ranked outfielder on the NL All-Star team for 2020 and top-ranked designated hitter on the NL All-Star team for 2019-20 (with 16.5 points, most among all NL batters over the past two seasons).

2019 All-Stars on the 2019-20 All-Star team

There are 18 players on the 2019 All-Star teams who are on the 2019-20 All-Star teams. Nearly three-quarters of the games played over the past two seasons were played in 2019.

There are two players on both the 2019 All-Star teams and the 2019-20 All-Star teams who earned all their points in 2019 and none in 2020:

The other players on both NL All-Star teams for both 2019 and 2019-20 are first baseman Freddie Freeman of the Braves (10.2 in 2019, 13.7 in 2019-20), second baseman Asdrubal Cabrera of the Nationals (9.0 in 2019, 13.5 in 2019-20), outfielder Christian Yelich of the Brewers (11.7 in 2019, 13.2 in 2019-20), Marcell Ozuna who was top outfielder in 2019 with the Cardinals and top designated hitter over 2019-20 with the Braves (12.0 in 2019, 16.5 over 2019-20), pitcher Jacob deGrom of the Mets (19.1 in 2019, 27.8 over 2019-20) and pitcher Jack Flaherty of the Cardinals (16.5 in 2019, 21.2 over 2019-20).
