Cubs pitcher Hayden Wesneski is Box-Toppers Player of the Day in Saturday’s spring training games.

Wesneski struck out four over four scoreless and hitless innings, allowing no walks and picking up the win, in the 5-2 win over the Dodgers.

Wesneski would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day if this were a regular season game. Because it’s a preseason exhibition game, no Box-Toppers points are awarded.

Wesneski earned 1.7 Box-Toppers points in 2022.

Parker Meadows of the Tigers is Box-Toppers AL Player of the Day in Saturday’s spring training games.

American League Player of the Day—Parker Meadows of the Tigers hit two home runs and went 3-for-3, scoring twice and driving in four runs, in the 16-7 win over the Braves.

Meadows would have earned 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day if this were a regular season game.

Meadows has yet to make his regular season Major League debut and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.

Buddy Reed of the Dodgers is Box-Toppers NL Batter of the Day in Saturday’s spring training games.

National League Batter of the Day—Buddy Reed of the Dodgers homered and went 1-for-1, scoring once and driving in two runs, in the 13-8 win over the Giants.

Reed has yet to make his regular season Major League debut and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.

American League Batter of the Day—There is no separate AL Batter of the Day for Saturday because the overall AL Player of the Day is batter Parker Meadows.

Notable—Jose Ramirez of the Guardians has the most 2022 Box-Toppers points among the 16 who earned Player of the Game honors Saturday.

Ramirez (HR 1-2 R 2BI in the 4-2 win over the Athletics) earned 11.7 Box-Toppers points in 2022, second among AL batters behind Aaron Judge of the Yankees (13.2).

Fernando Tatis Jr. of the Padres is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Saturday’s spring training win over the White Sox.

Also notable—Fernando Tatis Jr. of the Padres earned Player of the Game honors in a spring training game Saturday though he is still under suspension in regular season games until April 20.

Tatis (2B 2-3 R 2BI in the 6-5 win over the White Sox) was suspended for 80 games in August 2022 for testing positive for use of a banned substance. His suspension carries over 12 games into the 2023 regular season.

Tatis did not play in 2022 as he was recovering from injury prior to his suspension. He last earned Box-Toppers regular season Player of the Game honors on Sept. 4, 2021, a season in which he had 10.2 Box-Toppers points, second among NL batters.

In Saturday’s 16 spring training games, eight who earned Player of the Game honors have earned Box-Toppers points in the past (see those players here); the remaining eight players have yet to earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in a regular season game.

Scoring—No Box-Toppers points are awarded in exhibition games. Were it a regular season day, Wesneski would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Meadows would have earned 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day. Reed would have earned 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being NL Batter of the Day. All of Saturday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) would have earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
