Rockies pitcher German Marquez is Box-Toppers Player of the Day in Tuesday’s spring training games.

Marquez struck out seven over four scoreless innings, allowing two hits and no walks, in the 5-2 win over the Cubs.

Marquez would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day if this were a regular season game. Because it’s a preseason exhibition game, no Box-Toppers points are awarded.

Marquez earned 4.7 Box-Toppers points in 2022. He earned 17.4 Box-Toppers points in 2021, seventh overall and fifth among National League pitchers.

American League Player of the Day—Angels pitcher Kenny Rosenberg struck out five over three scoreless and hitless innings, allowing no walks, in the 8-6 win over the Guardians.

Rosenberg would have earned 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day if this were a regular season game.

Rosenberg made his Major League debut April 18, 2022, and has played in three games, but has yet to earn his first regular season Box-Toppers Player of the Game honor and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.

Marcell Ozuna of the Braves is Box-Toppers NL Batter of the Day in Tuesday’s spring training games.

National League Batter of the Day—Marcell Ozuna of the Braves doubled and went 2-for-3, scoring twice and driving in four runs, in the 15-5 win over the Phillies.

Ozuna earned 2.5 Box-Toppers points in 2022.

American League Batter of the Day—Andres Chaparro of the Yankees hit a three-run homer and went 1-for-1, scoring once and driving in three runs, in the 10-3 win over the Blue Jays.

Chaparro has yet to make his regular season Major League debut and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.

Erik Gonzalez of the White Sox is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Tuesday’s spring training win over the Athletics.

Notable—Erik Gonzalez of the White Sox earned his second Box-Toppers Player of the Game of the 2023 spring training season Tuesday.

Gonzalez (2B 2-2 R BI in the 5-4 win over the Athletics) was also Player of the Game March 4.

Box-Toppers tracks spring training games between two Major League teams and does not track World Baseball Classic games or other games that involve non-Major League teams. In Tuesday’s 15 spring training games, two ended in a tie in which no Player of the Game honors were awarded (see chart below for game details). In the remaining 13, five who earned Player of the Game honors have earned Box-Toppers points in the past (see those players here); the remaining eight players have yet to earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in a regular season game.

Scoring—No Box-Toppers points are awarded in exhibition games. Were it a regular season day, Marquez would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Rosenberg would have earned 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day. Ozuna and Chaparro would have each earned 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Tuesday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) would have earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
