Braves pitcher Jared Shuster is Box-Toppers Player of the Day in Friday’s spring training games.

Shuster struck out seven over four scoreless innings, allowing three hits and one walk, in the 8-0 win over the Red Sox.

Shuster would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day if this were a regular season game. Because it’s a preseason exhibition game, no Box-Toppers points are awarded.

Shuster has yet to make his regular season Major League debut and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.

Shuster had a Box-Toppers game score Friday of +7.0, same as Reds pitcher Graham Ashcraft, who was Player of the Game in the 7-1 win over the Guardians (4IP 2H 0R 0BB 5K W). But Shuster beat Ashcraft for Player of the Day honors because he had more strikeouts—seven vs. five.

Jake Lamb of the Angels is Box-Toppers AL Player of the Day in Friday’s spring training games.

American League Player of the Day—Jake Lamb of the Angels hit a grand slam, doubled and went 2-for-3, scoring once and driving in five runs, in the 12-1 win over the Royals.

Lamb would have earned 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day if this were a regular season game.

Lamb earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points in 2022 with the Dodgers.

Darren Baker of the Nationals is Box-Toppers NL Batter of the Day in Friday’s spring training games.

National League Batter of the Day—Darren Baker of the Nationals hit a grand slam and went 2-for-2, scoring twice and driving in four runs, in the 11-7 win over the Astros.

Baker has yet to make his regular season Major League debut and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.

Baker is the son of Astros manager Dusty Baker.

American League Batter of the Day—There is no separate AL Batter of the Day for Friday because the overall AL Player of the Day is batter Jake Lamb.

Mets pitcher Carlos Carrasco is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Friday’s spring training win over the Marlins.

Notable—Mets pitcher Carlos Carrasco has the most 2022 Box-Toppers points among Friday’s Player of the Game winners.

Carrasco (4IP 2H R BB 7K W in the 6-1 win over the Marlins) earned 9.7 Box-Toppers points in 2022, 27th among NL pitchers.

Box-Toppers tracks spring training games between two Major League teams and does not track World Baseball Classic games or other games that involve non-Major League teams. In Friday’s 17 spring training games, one ended in a tie in which no Player of the Game honor was awarded (see chart below for game details). In the remaining 16, seven who earned Player of the Game honors have earned Box-Toppers points in the past (see those players here); the remaining nine players have yet to earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in a regular season game.

Scoring—No Box-Toppers points are awarded in exhibition games. Were it a regular season day, Shuster would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Lamb would have earned 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day. Baker would have earned 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being NL Batter of the Day. All of Friday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) would have earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
