Pirates’ Oviedo tops players for Sunday, Aug. 6; Mariners’ Miller rises to 6th in rankings

Pirates pitcher Johan Oviedo is Sunday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day.

Also Sunday, Mariners pitcher Bryce Miller rises to sixth in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning American League Player of the Day honors.

Player of the Day

Oviedo struck out six over seven scoreless innings, allowing two hits and three walks, in the 4-1 win over the Marlins.

Oviedo earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 6.7 for the season, 66th among all players and 25th among National League pitchers.

American League Player of the Day

Mariners pitcher Bryce Miller struck out 10 over five innings, allowing one hit and no walks, in the 3-2, 10-inning win over the Angels. Miller did not earn the win, picking up a no-decision, because the game was tied when he exited.

Miller earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day, giving him 12.1 for the season, sixth among all players and fourth among AL pitchers.

Miller had a +8.0 Box-Toppers game score Sunday, same as Johan Oviedo. But Oviedo beat Miller for overall Player of the Day on a tiebreaker since he earned the win in his game, while Miller picked up a no-decision.

American League Player of the Day is Mariners pitcher Bryce Miller.

American League Batter of the Day

Jake Meyers of the Astros hit a pair of three-run homers, going 2-for-4, scoring twice and driving in six runs, in the 9-7 win over the Yankees.

Notable

Elvis Andrus of the White Sox earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors for the second straight day Sunday.

Andrus (2-2B 3-5 R 2BI in the 5-3 win over the Guardians) was also Saturday’s AL Batter of the Day in the 7-4 win over the Guardians (HR 2B 3-4 2R 2BI). Andrus earned 1.5 Box-Toppers points Saturday and earns 1.0 point Sunday, giving him 3.5 for the season, 40th among AL batters.

Also notable

Dodgers pitcher Lance Lynn now has 115.8 career Box-Toppers points—57th-most among all players since 1995—after earning Player of the Game honors Sunday.

Lynn (6IP 4H R 2BB 6K W in the 8-2 win over the Padres) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, passing two players on the “all-time” career points list—Josh Beckett (114.9) and Tim Lincecum (115.0). Lynn now trails 56th-ranked player Torii Hunter (115.9). Lynn ranks 14th among active players in career points, eighth among active NL pitchers.

This was Lynn’s first Player of the Game honor since being traded from the White Sox to the Dodgers at the end of July. Lynn now has 2.0 Box-Toppers points on the season.
