Kershaw has 20.0 Box-Toppers points to lead all players and has led since May 7. However, he hasn’t pitched since June 20 due to injury and isn’t expected to return until at least late August. Meanwhile, his formerly large lead has narrowed during his time away and this week, Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer came within 1.3 Box-Toppers points—Scherzer now has 18.7 Box-Toppers points. Scherzer is now in position to pass Kershaw at his next start if he earns overall Player of the Day (worth 2.0 Box-Toppers points) or National League Player of the Day (worth 1.7 points).
Meanwhile, there is a new leader among American League pitchers in Box-Toppers points this week. Indians pitcher Corey Kluber (14.5 Box-Toppers points) passed previous leader Cole Hamels (14.1). Kluber ranks fourth among all players.
Other category leaders remain the same:
National League pitchers—Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers leads with 20.0 Box-Toppers points, first among all players.
American League batters—Jose Altuve of the Astros leads with 10.0 Box-Toppers points, 19th among all players.
National League batters—Matt Carpenter of the Cardinals leads with 7.5 Box-Toppers points, 44th among all players. This week, Jay Bruce of the Mets (recently traded from the Reds) tied Carpenter at 7.5 points, but Carpenter still ranks ahead of Bruce on a tiebreaker—he has more 2015 Box-Toppers points—5.5 vs. 3.2.
So far this season, 612 different players have earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors. There are 281 players who have more than 2.0 Box-Toppers points. There are 90 players who have made their Box-Toppers debut so far this season, the first time in their career they earned Player of the Game honors.
About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
