The overall Box-Toppers points leader, Blake Snell of the Rays (27.2), ranked second in ERA (1.89).
Five of the top 10 ERA leaders finished in the top 10 in Box-Toppers points in 2018. In addition to Snell, they were:
Aaron Nola of the Phillies, who ranked fourth in ERA (2.37) and fifth in Box-Toppers points (21.1).
Justin Verlander of the Astros, who ranked fifth in ERA (2.52) and third in Box-Toppers points (24.1).
Max Scherzer of the Nationals, who ranked sixth in ERA (2.53) and second in Box-Toppers points (25.1).
Gerrit Cole of the Astros, who ranked 10th in ERA (2.88) and eighth in Box-Toppers points (18.0).
deGrom won the National League Cy Young Award largely on the strength of his low ERA, despite having a win-loss record of just 10-9, setting the record for the fewest wins in a season for a Cy Young winner. deGrom did not win many games because he did not receive much run support and given that, it is remarkable he earned as many Box-Toppers points as he did. His 16.8 points ranked third among NL pitchers. But on the other hand, he was far behind Scherzer, the NL leader in Box-Toppers points among pitchers with 25.5—deGrom had only two-thirds as many points as Scherzer.
Miles Mikolas of the Cardinals had the fewest Box-Toppers points among the top 10 in ERA. Mikolas ranked seventh in ERA (2.83) and 34th among all players in Box-Toppers points (11.7), 16th among NL pitchers.
About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
