Giants pitcher Landen Roupp is Box-Toppers Player of the Day in Thursday’s spring training games.
Roupp struck out five over three scoreless innings, allowing one hit and no walks, in the 6-4 win over the Mariners. Roupp did not earn the win, picking up a no-decision, because the game was in a scoreless tie when he exited.
Roupp had a +7.0 Box-Toppers game score, best among all Giants players and highest among all of Thursday’s Player of the Game winners.
Roupp earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points in 2024, his rookie season, his only career Box-Toppers points.
If this were a regular season game, Roupp would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day (1.0 point as Player of the Game and 1.0 bonus point as overall Player of the Day). However, no Box-Toppers points are awarded because it’s a preseason exhibition game.
American League Player of the Day
Marcelo Mayer of the Red Sox homered, tripled and went 3-for-3, scoring once and driving in three runs, in the 6-5 win over the Tigers.
Mayer has played 272 games in four minor league seasons after the Red Sox drafted him fourth overall in the 2021 amateur draft. He has yet to make his Major League debut and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.
If this were a regular season game, Mayer would have earned 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day (1.0 point as Player of the Game and 0.7 bonus points as AL Player of the Day).
National League Batter of the Day
Nick Solak of the Pirates hit two doubles and went 3-for-3, scoring three times and driving in one run, in the 12-1 win over the Twins.
Solak has 7.5 career Box-Toppers points earned from 2019 to 2021 with the Rangers. He earned no points in 2022 and 2023, playing in only 37 combined games. In 2024, he played 90 minor league games in the Mariners organization.
If this were a regular season game, Solak would have earned 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being NL Batter of the Day (1.0 point as Player of the Game and 0.5 bonus points as overall NL Batter of the Day).
American League Batter of the Day
There is no separate AL Batter of the Day for Thursday because the overall AL Player of the Day is batter Marcelo Mayer.
Notable
White Sox pitcher Martín Pérez has the highest 2024 Box-Toppers point total among Thursday’s Player of the Game winners.
Pérez (2IP H 0R 0BB 2K ND in the 4-2 win over the Guardians) earned 5.7 Box-Toppers points in 2024 with the Pirates and Padres, 64th among NL pitchers.
Thursday’s games
In Thursday’s 16 completed spring training games featuring matchups between two Major League teams, there were seven Player of the Game winners who had previously earned Box-Toppers points in regular season games. In five of Thursday’s games, the Player of the Game winner was a player who has yet to earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in the regular season and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.
Four games ended in a tie (Tigers vs. Rays, Yankees vs. Phillies, Angels vs. Cubs and Diamondbacks vs. Reds), so no Player of the Game honors were awarded.
Scoring
No Box-Toppers points are awarded in exhibition games. Were it a regular season day, Roupp would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, Mayer would have earned 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day and Solak would have earned 1.5 points for being NL Batter of the Day. All of Thursday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart) would have earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
