About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations

Scherzer earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 8.4 for the season, rising to 12th in season player rankings, fifth among National League pitchers.

Scherzer also now has 190.2 career Box-Toppers points, ninth among all players since 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began. He trails eighth-ranked player, Astros pitcher Justin Verlander (191.9) by 1.7 points. Scherzer ranks sixth among active players in career points.

American League Player of the Day—Mike Trout of the Angels hit two home runs, including a grand slam, in the 11-6 win over the Blue Jays. Trout went 3-for-6, scoring twice and driving in seven runs.

Trout earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day, giving him 5.2 for the season, rising to sixth among AL batters.

Interestingly, this is the first time in his career that Trout has earned AL Player of the Day honors. Since making his Box-Toppers debut in 2011, Trout has earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors 58 times, including Wednesday. He has earned AL Batter of the Day honors (worth 1.5 points) 17 times and has never earned overall Player of the Day honors (worth 2.0 points).

Trout has 67.2 career Box-Toppers points, fourth among active AL batters. His 51.2 Box-Toppers points earned from 2014-19 is most among AL batters over that period.

National League Batter of the Day—Chris Taylor of the Dodgers hit two home runs, including a three-run shot, and doubled, in the 9-2 win over the Giants. Taylor went 3-for-4, scoring three times and driving in four runs.

American League Batter of the Day—There is no separate AL Batter of the Day for Wednesday because the overall AL Player of the Day is batter Mike Trout.

Notable—Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia now has 202.4 career Box-Toppers points after earning Player of the Game honors Wednesday.

Sabathia (6IP 3H R 3BB 7K W in the 12-1 win over the Rays) ranks fourth among all players in career Box-Toppers points since 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began. He trails third-ranked player, Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw (220.5). Sabathia ranks second among active players in career points, behind Kershaw.

Sabathia now has 2.0 Box-Toppers points on the season, 60th among AL pitchers.

Debut—Bryan Reynolds of the Pirates made his Box-Toppers debut Wednesday with his first career Player of the Game honor.

Reynolds (HR 3-4 3R 3BI in the 8-7 win over the Tigers) made his Major League debut April 20 and was playing in his 53rd career game.

Scoring—Scherzer earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Trout earns 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day. Taylor earns 1.5 points for being NL Batter of the Day. All of Wednesday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
