About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations

Buehler earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 7.0 for the season, rising to 24th in season player rankings, 11th among National League pitchers.

Buehler had a Box-Toppers game score Friday of +18.0, which is the second-highest ranked game score for a Player of the Game winner so far in 2019. He ranks just behind the +19.0 Box-Toppers game score recorded on May 19 by Indians pitcher Shane Bieber (CG 5H 0R 0BB 15K W in the 10-0 win over the Orioles).

One other Player of the Game winner in 2019 also had a Box-Toppers game score the same as Buehler’s +18.0—Red Sox pitcher Chris Sale on June 5 (CG 3H 0R 0BB 12K W in the 8-0 win over the Royals). But since Buehler had more strikeouts than Sale (15 vs. 12), his game score ranks ahead on a tiebreaker.

American League Player of the Day—Mallex Smith of the Mariners doubled and went 3-for-3, scoring four times and driving in one run, in the 10-9 win over the Orioles.

National League Batter of the Day—Alex Dickerson of the Giants hit a grand slam and tripled in the 11-5 win over the Diamondbacks. Dickerson went 3-for-5, scoring once and driving in six runs.

This was Dickerson’s Box-Toppers debut, the first time in his career he earned Player of the Game honors. Dickerson made his Major League debut Aug. 5, 2015, and was playing in his 108th career game.

American League Batter of the Day—There is no separate AL Batter of the Day for Friday because the overall AL Player of the Day is batter Mallex Smith.

Notable—Marcell Ozuna of the Cardinals has the most 2019 Box-Toppers points among the 15 who earned Player of the Game honors Friday.

Ozuna (HR 3-4 2R 3BI in the 5-1 win over the Angels) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 8.0 for the season, rising to 19th in season player rankings. Ozuna also rises to second place among NL batters, behind Cody Bellinger of the Dodgers (9.2).

Scoring—Buehler earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Smith earns 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day. Dickerson earns 1.5 points for being NL Batter of the Day. All of Friday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
