Actually, because the 2019 season so far is a relatively small sample size—just under halfway complete—we’ll also look at top players since the start of the 2018 season.

About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
Results of the first round of fan All-Star voting will be announced today (June 21), with the top three vote-getters at each infield position and top nine vote-getters in the outfield to be voted on by fans in the second phase of the election to be held June 26 and 27.
Dodgers outfielder Cody Bellinger leads all batters in 2019 Box-Toppers points with 9.2, making him one of the three National League Box-Toppers All-Star outfielders for the 2019 season. However, because Bellinger earned no points in 2018 (despite playing in all 162 games) he is not one of the top three NL outfielders in points over 2018-19 (he ranks ninth among NL outfielders over that span with 9.2 points).
White Sox outfielder Eloy Jimenez leads American League batters in 2019 Box-Toppers points with 6.5, making him one of the three Box-Toppers All-Star American League outfielders for the 2019 season. Proving what a small sample size the 2019 season is so far, Jimenez was not even among the top 10 AL batters in Box-Toppers points for 2019 last week. He ranked sixth among AL outfielders last week with 4.0 points. This week, he is not only on Box-Toppers 2019 AL All-Star team, but is the top-ranked AL batter for the season.
Jimenez is a rookie and so has no Box-Toppers points in 2018 and does not rank among Box-Toppers All-Stars on the 2018-19 AL All-Star team.
Brewers outfielder Christian Yelich leads all batters in Box-Toppers points over 2018-19 with 17.0 and so is one of Box-Toppers’ three NL All-Star outfielders for 2018-19. Yelich is also on Box-Toppers’ 2019 NL All-Star team as third-ranked outfielder with 5.5 points.
J.D. Martinez of the Red Sox leads AL batters over 2018-19 with 17.0 Box-Toppers points, making Box-Toppers’ AL All-Star team as top-ranked outfielder. With 4.5 Box-Toppers points so far in 2019, he ranks seventh among AL outfielders and does not make the 2019 AL All-Star team.
There are three AL batters who make both Box-Toppers’ 2019 and 2018-19 teams:
Jose Abreu of the White Sox leads AL first basemen in points in 2019 (4.0) and over 2018-19 (9.0).
Alex Bregman of the Astros leads AL third basemen in 2019 (4.5) and over 2018-19 (10.7).
Shohei Ohtani of the Angels leads AL designated hitters in 2019 (5.5) and over 2018-19 (13.5). (It should be noted that Ohtani earned 4.0 of his 8.0 points in 2018 as a pitcher.)
There are three NL batters who make both Box-Toppers’ 2019 and 2018-19 teams:
Ketel Marte of the Diamondbacks leads NL second basemen in 2019 (6.0) and 2018-19 (10.0).
Nolan Arenado of the Rockies leads NL third basemen in 2019 (6.5) and 2018-19 (11.5).
Christian Yelich of the Brewers ranks third among NL outfielders in 2019 (5.5) and first among NL outfielders over 2018-19 (17.0).
All other batters in Box-Toppers’ 2019 and 2018-19 All-Star teams are listed in the chart at the top of this page. The Box-Toppers National League team has 13 positions—the customary five infield spots, three for outfield, four for starting pitchers plus one spot for closing pitcher. The Box-Toppers American League team has 14 spots with the addition of the designated hitter.
Fans don’t get to pick pitchers for the All-Star Game (which doesn’t make sense), but Box-Toppers lists the top pitchers by league in Box-Toppers points for both 2019 and 2018-19.
Astros pitcher Justin Verlander leads all pitchers (and all players) in both 2019 (13.8 Box-Toppers points) and over 2018-19 (37.9), thus making both AL All-Star teams as starting pitcher.
Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu leads all NL starting pitchers in 2019 (10.7 Box-Toppers points).
Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer leads all NL pitchers over 2018-19 (33.5) and makes the 2019 All-Star team, ranking fourth among NL starting pitchers this season (8.4).
In addition to Verlander and Scherzer making both the 2019 and 2018-19 All-Star teams as starting pitchers, these three also make both teams:
Rays pitcher Charlie Morton ranks second among AL pitchers in 2019 (11.8) and fourth among AL pitchers over 2018-19 (26.6).
Astros pitcher Gerrit Cole ranks third among AL pitchers in 2019 (10.4) and third among AL pitchers over 2018-19 (28.4).
Diamondbacks pitcher Zack Greinke ranks second among NL starting pitchers in 2019 (10.2) and third among NL starters over 2018-19 (23.2).
Also, Brewers closing pitcher Josh Hader leads NL closers in 2019 (12.0) and over 2018-19 (23.7). Hader, in fact, leads all NL pitchers in 2019, ranking second among all players.
The Houston Astros have three players among the 2019 AL All-Stars and also have three players among the 2018-19 AL All-Stars. The Chicago White Sox and Milwaukee Brewers each have three players among the 2019 All-Stars. The Arizona Diamondbacks have three players among the 2018-19 All-Stars.
