About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
Also Friday, Christian Yelich of the Brewers extended his lead among National League batters in 2019 Box-Toppers points after earning Player of the Game honors.
Player of the Day—McKay struck out seven over 3 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and no walks, in the 5-0 win over the Blue Jays.
McKay did not earn the win, picking up a no-decision, because he did not pitch the requisite five innings to earn the win as a starter. However, since he did pitch at least three innings, he was eligible to earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors.
McKay earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 3.0 for the season, 321st among all players and 80th among American League pitchers.
National League Player of the Day—Mauricio Dubon of the Giants homered, doubled and went 3-for-4, scoring once and driving in three runs, in the 5-4 win over the Dodgers.
Dubon had a Box-Toppers game score Friday of +3.0, tied with two other NL batters who earned Player of the Game honors Friday. Both Ketel Marte of the Diamondbacks and Christian Yelich of the Brewers also had similar line scores (3-4 R 3BI), however Dubon earned NL Player of the Day honors in a tiebreaker because he had a homer and a double, while both Marte and Yelich each hit only one home run in their games. That meant Dubon earned 1.7 Box-Toppers points Friday while Marte and Yelich each earned 1.0 point.
This was also Dubon’s Box-Toppers debut, the first time in his career he earned Player of the Game honors. Dubon made his Major League debut July 7 and was playing in his ninth career game.
American League Batter of the Day—Willie Calhoun of the Rangers hit two home runs, including a three-run shot, going 2-for-5, scoring twice and driving in four runs, in the 7-6 win over the Orioles.
National League Batter of the Day—There is no separate NL Batter of the Day for Friday because the overall NL Player of the Day is batter Mauricio Dubon.
Rankings—Christian Yelich of the Brewers extended his lead among NL batters in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Friday.
Yelich (HR 3-4 R 3BI in the 7-1 win over the Cubs) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 11.7 for the season, most among the 16 who earned Player of the Game honors Friday. Yelich ranks 21st among all players and rises to first among all batters, passing Nelson Cruz of the Twins (11.0 points, ranked 30th overall). Yelich also extends his lead among NL batters ahead of second-place Freddie Freeman of the Braves (10.2).
Yelich also avoids tying the record for the lowest Box-Toppers point total to lead NL batters in a season. With 10.7 points Yelich had been tied with Nolan Arenado of the Rockies, who in 2016 led NL batters with 10.7 points. That is also the lowest point total to lead any major category (AL and NL pitching and batting) in a single season in Box-Toppers tracking history (which began in 1995).
Yelich has now exceeded his 2018 Box-Toppers point total of 11.5, which led NL batters.
Scoring—McKay earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Dubon earns 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day. Calhoun earns 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Friday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.
