About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations

National League Batter of the Day—Pete Alonso of the Mets hit two home runs, including a three-run shot, in the 9-1 win over the Dodgers. Alonso went 3-for-5, scoring twice and driving in five runs.
Alonso earns 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being NL Batter of the Day, giving him 9.2 for the season, rising from eighth to first in season player rankings. He passes previous leader, Padres pitcher Joe Musgrove (8.7), who only held the lead one day after moving to the top spot Friday. Passing Musgrove, Alonso now leads all NL players and he leads all NL batters, ahead of second-place Mookie Betts of the Dodgers (6.5).
This is the first time Alonso has led all players in Box-Toppers season player rankings and it is the latest in a regular-length season that a batter has led all players in Box-Toppers points since 2013. Miguel Cabrera of the Tigers led that season on June 28 and 29 with 12.4 points. He had also led all players from June 1 to 13 that season.
Cabrera finished 2013 with 16.9 Box-Toppers points, ranked eighth overall. It is the last time a batter has finished among the top 10 players in Box-Toppers points (though that was a much more common occurrence prior to 2009, when batters regularly appeared among the top 10 players).
Only four times previously since 1998 has a full-time batter led player rankings as late as June in a regular-length (non-pandemic shortened) season:
2004—Scott Rolen led until July 2.
2006—Albert Pujols led until June 12.
2009—Pujols led until Aug. 11.
2013—Cabrera led until June 29.
(Shohei Ohtani of the Angels, who is both a pitcher and batter, led until June 1 this season.)
Alonso has earned Player of the Game honors six times in 2022, including these five previous times:
American League Batter of the Day—Salvador Perez of the Royals homered, doubled and went 2-for-4, scoring twice and driving in three runs, in the 6-0 win over the Astros.
Debut—Cubs pitcher Matt Swarmer made his Box-Toppers debut Saturday with his first career Player of the Game honor.
Swarmer (6IP 2H R 2BB 5K W in the 6-1 win over the Cardinals) made his Major League debut May 30 and was playing in his second career game.
Scoring—Severino earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Gore earns 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day. Alonso and Perez each earn 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Saturday’s other Player of the Game winners (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.
About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
