Twins pitcher Joe Ryan is Tuesday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day.
Ryan struck out eight over seven scoreless and hitless innings, allowing two walks, in the 6-3 win over the Royals.
Ryan exited after 106 pitches with a no-hitter. Reliever Jovani Moran kept the no-hitter intact through the eighth inning, before giving up two hits in the ninth inning.
Ryan earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 12.7 for the season, 23rd among all players and 10th among American League pitchers.
National League Player of the Day—Padres pitcher Yu Darvish struck out seven over eight scoreless innings, allowing two hits and no walks, in the 2-0 win over the Mariners.
Darvish earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day, giving him 13.8 for the season, 15th among all players and eighth among NL pitchers.
Darvish also now has 121.0 career Box-Toppers points, 48th among all players since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995. He trails 47th-ranked player Gary Sheffield (124.1). Darvish ranks 15th among active players in career points, eighth among active NL pitchers.
American League Batter of the Day—Mark Mathias of the Rangers hit two homers, doubled and went 3-for-5, scoring three times and driving in four runs, in the 8-7 win over the Athletics.
National League Batter of the Day—Willy Adames of the Brewers doubled and went 2-for-3, scoring once and driving in two runs, in the 8-4 win over the Cardinals.
Notable—Ryan and Darvish are two of five players earning Player of the Game honors Tuesday with more than 10.0 Box-Toppers points in 2022. The others:
Braves pitcher Kyle Wright (5.1IP 3H R 3BB 4K W in the 4-1 win over the Giants) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 13.4 for the season, 17th among all players and 10th among NL pitchers.
Aaron Judge of the Yankees (2HR 3-4 2R 2BI in the 7-6, 10-inning win over the Red Sox) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 11.2 for the season, 31st among all players and second among AL batters. Judge rose to second place, passing Jose Ramirez of the Guardians (10.7) and now trails Shohei Ohtani of the Angels (21.0), who has earned 16.0 of his 21.0 points as a starting pitcher and who would lose his qualification to rank among batters if he earns his next Player of the Game honor as a pitcher.
Rays pitcher Jeffrey Springs (6IP 3H 0R 2BB 5K W in the 4-2 win over the Blue Jays) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 10.7 for the season, 38th among all players and 19th among AL pitchers. Springs becomes the 43rd player this season to reach 10.0 Box-Toppers points. It is his first season with 10.0 points. His only previous season earning points was 2021 with the Rays, when he had 3.0 points.
Also notable—Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw now has 256.6 career Box-Toppers points after earning Player of the Game honors Tuesday.
Kershaw (7IP 2H 0R BB 5K W in the 4-0 win over the Diamondbacks) ranks second among all players in career Box-Toppers points since player tracking began in 1995. He trails top-ranked player Randy Johnson (282.5) by 25.9 points. (It should be noted Johnson would have an estimated 380 points if his entire career from 1988 were tracked.) Kershaw leads active players in career points, ahead of second-place player, Mets pitcher Max Scherzer (234.3).
Kershaw now has 8.0 Box-Toppers points in 2022, 29th among NL pitchers.
Debut—Pirates pitcher Luis Ortiz made his Box-Toppers debut Tuesday with his first career Player of the Game honor.
Ortiz (5.2IP H 0R 3BB 5K ND in the 1-0 win over the Reds) was also making his Major League debut.
Sandy Alcantara, NL leader in Box-Toppers points (18.1), does not win Player of the Game honors Tuesday because @Marlins lost to @Phillies. He had -2.0 B-T game score (7IP 8H 2R BB 4K L).

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
