Brewers' Zach Davies tops players for Saturday, Aug. 26; Cubs' Rizzo bolsters Box-Toppers points lead among NL batters

Also Saturday, Anthony Rizzo of the Cubs extended his season Box-Toppers points lead among National League batters after earning National League Batter of the Day honors.

Player of the Day—Davies struck out seven over seven scoreless innings, allowing three hits and no walks, in the 3-0 win over the Dodgers.

American League Player of the Day—Yankees pitcher Sonny Gray struck out nine over seven innings, allowing one run, three hits and two walks, in the 6-3 win over the Mariners. 

It is the first time Gray has earned Player of the Game honors since being traded from the Oakland Athletics on July 31. Gray has 7.4 Box-Toppers points on the season (5.7 earned with the Athletics) and ranks 16th among AL pitchers.

National League Batter of the Day—Anthony Rizzo of the Cubs hit two homers, including a three-run shot, in the 17-2 win over the Phillies. Rizzo went 3-for-5, scoring three times and driving in five runs.

Rizzo earns 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being NL Batter of the Day, giving him 13.0 for the season, extending his lead among NL batters. He leads second-place NL batter, Cody Bellinger of the Dodgers (8.7) by 4.3 points. Rizzo also leads all batters, ahead of AL batting leader Edwin Encarnacion of the Indians (11.1). Rizzo rises to 13th place in overall Box-Toppers player rankings for the season.

American League Batter of the Day—Kole Calhoun of the Angels homered and went 3-for-4, scoring three times and driving in two runs, in the 7-6 win over the Astros.

Debut—Marlins pitcher Drew Steckenrider made his Box-Toppers debut Saturday with his first career Player of the Game honor.

Steckenrider (1.1IP 0H 0R 0BB 3K ND in the 2-1, 11-inning win over the Padres) made his Major League debut May 24 and was playing in his 24th career game. He is the 3,899th player to debut in Box-Toppers since record keeping began in 1995.

Scoring—Davies earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Gray earns 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day. Rizzo and Calhoun each earn 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Saturday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.
