Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer took the lead in season Box-Toppers player rankings this week, passing previous leader Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw, who had led since mid-May.
Scherzer now has 23.0 Box-Toppers points in 2017, ahead of Kershaw’s 22.1. But Kershaw returns from five weeks on the disabled list Friday and could quickly regain the lead if he earns Player of the Game honors.
Scherzer also is the new leader among National League pitchers. All other category leaders remain the same:
American League pitchers—Chris Sale of the Red Sox maintains his lead with 22.1 Box-Toppers points, earning 1.0 point in the past week. He leads second-place AL pitcher Carlos Carrasco of the Yankees (15.1). Sale ranks third among all players, behind Scherzer (23.0) and Kershaw (22.1).
National League batters—Anthony Rizzo of the Cubs maintains his lead with 13.0 Box-Toppers points, earning 1.5 point in the past week. He leads second-place NL batter Giancarlo Stanton of the Marlins (10.0). Rizzo ranks 13th among all players.
American League batters—Edwin Encarnacion of the Indians maintains his lead with 12.1 Box-Toppers points, earning 1.0 points in the past week. He leads second-place AL batter Ryon Healy of the Athletics (9.7). Encarnacion ranks 15th among all players.
Indians pitcher Carlos Carrasco and Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom rose into the top 10 since last week. Carrasco (15.1 points) rises to sixth and deGrom (14.7) rises to ninth. Two players were displaced from the top 10 with their rise—Dodgers pitcher Alex Wood (14.0) falls to 11th and Mariners pitcher James Paxton (13.7) falls to 12th.
So far this season, 706 different players have earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors. There are 364 players who have more than 2.0 Box-Toppers points. There are 146 players who have made their Box-Toppers debut so far this season, the first time in their career they earned Player of the Game honors. Seven players debuted in the past week.
About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
