American League Batter of the Day—There is no separate AL Batter of the Day for Tuesday because the overall AL Player of the Day is batter Jed Lowrie.

Rankings—Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer rises to retake the lead in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Tuesday.

Scherzer (7IP 5H 2R 2BB 7K W in the 4-2 win over the Braves) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 24.0 for the season. He rises from third to first in player rankings, moving ahead of previous leader, Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw (23.1).

Scherzer previously led in Box-Toppers points this season from Aug. 28 to 31. At the time, he passed Kershaw on Aug. 28 with 23.0 points and was passed on Sept. 1, when Kershaw reached 23.1 points. Since then, Scherzer has had three chances to pass Kershaw, making starts on Sept. 2, Sept. 8 and Sept. 13. But Scherzer did not earn Player of the Game honors in any of those three games. The Nationals won two of those games and Scherzer earned the win both times.

Scherzer led players in Box-Toppers points in 2016 with 25.7.

BTP: Box-Toppers points
List of top 100 players since 1995 as of July 30, 2017.

Scherzer’s 2017 lead could be short-lived. Third-place player, Red Sox pitcher Chris Sale (23.1 Box-Toppers points) has the chance to take the lead in his start Wednesday against the Orioles. If Sale earns at least Player of the Game honors (worth 1.0 Box-Toppers point), he would pass Scherzer to take the lead.

Scherzer now has 155.7 career Box-Toppers points, rising to 16th place among all players since 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began. With his point Tuesday, he passes Mike Mussina (155.6) and now trails 15th-ranked player Tim Hudson (157.0). (It should be noted that if Mussina’s entire career from 1991 were tracked, rough projections put his career point total at about 193.)

Team rankings—The Cleveland Indians maintain their Box-Toppers team rankings lead with a win Tuesday. The Washington Nationals rise to a tie for second after they won and the Los Angeles Dodgers lost. Here are the updated rankings:

  1. Cleveland Indians 130.7 Box-Toppers points
  2. Washington Nationals 127.9
  3. Los Angeles Dodgers 127.9

Notable—Two other players with more than 10 Box-Toppers points on the season earned Player of the Game honors Tuesday:

  • Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola (7IP 5H 2R 2BB 8K W in the 6-2 win over the Braves) now has 15.8 Box-Toppers points on the season, rising to 11th place among all players and sixth place among NL pitchers.
  • Indians pitcher Mike Clevinger (6IP 3H R 2BB 6K W in the 6-3 win over the Angels) now has 11.4 Box-Toppers points on the season and ranks 21st among all players, eighth among AL pitchers.

Scoring—Anderson earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Lowrie earns 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day. Fowler earns 1.5 points for being NL Batter of the Day. All of Tuesday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
