About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations

(Post corrected Friday, January 25, 2019. Player of the Game honors in Tampa Bay’s win over Toronto was incorrect. Pitcher Blake Snell should have been credited with earning Player of the Game in that game rather than Willy Adames. That has been corrected. In addition, Snell also should have been credited earning American League Player of the Day, rather than Carlos Rodon of the White Sox. That has also been corrected.)

Reds pitcher Anthony DeSclafani is Friday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day.

Meanwhile, Rays pitcher Blake Snell rises to eighth place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Friday.

Player of the Day—DeSclafani struck out nine over seven scoreless innings, allowing three hits and no walks, in the 3-0 win over the Diamondbacks.

DeSclafani earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 3.0 for the season, 83rd among National League pitchers.

American League Player of the Day—Rays pitcher Blake Snell struck out six over five scoreless innings, allowing no hits or walks, in the 7-0 win over the Blue Jays.

Snell earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day, giving him 14.4 for the season, rising to eighth place among all players and sixth among AL pitchers.

(Previously, White Sox pitcher Carlos Rodon had been credited with earning AL Player of the Day honors, but an error discovered in January 2019 showed Snell, who had incorrectly not been named Player of the Game in his team’s win, was also AL Player of the Day since he had a higher Box-Toppers game score than Rodon, +11.0 vs. +7.0.)

American League Batter of the Day—Brock Holt of the Red Sox homered and went 3-for-4, scoring three times and driving in three runs, in the 19-12 win over the Orioles.

National League Batter of the Day—Andrew McCutchen of the Giants homered and went 1-for-2, scoring three times and driving in two runs, in the 13-10 win over the Pirates.

Notable—Mets pitcher Zack Wheeler has the most 2018 Box-Toppers points among the 15 who earned Player of the Game honors Friday.

Wheeler (7IP 4H 2R BB 8K W in the 6-2 win over the Marlins) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 6.7 for the season, 66th among all players and 30th among NL pitchers.

Debut—Padres pitcher Jacob Nix (6IP 4H 0R 2BB 4K W in the 2-0 win over the Phillies) made his Box-Toppers debut Friday, each earning his first career Player of the Game honors. Nix was also making his Major League debut.

Scoring—DeSclafani earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Snell earns 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day. Holt and McCutchen each earn 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Friday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
