About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations

Also Wednesday, Astros pitcher Justin Verlander rises to first place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning American League Player of the Day honors.

Player of the Day—Paddack struck out nine over seven scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk, in the 1-0 win over the Mariners.

Paddack earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 5.0 points for the season, rising to fourth in season player rankings, first among National League pitchers, passing previous leader Jose Quintana of the Cubs (4.7), who only took the lead Tuesday.

Though this is Paddack’s first Major League win, he had earned Player of the Game honors three times previously this season (earning 1.0 Box-Toppers point each time) when he picked up a no-decision. This is Paddack’s first career Player of the Day honor.

American League Player of the Day—Astros pitcher Justin Verlander struck out eight over eight innings, allowing one run, four hits an no walks, in the 7-1 win over the Twins.

Verlander earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day, giving him 6.4 points for the season, rising to take the lead in season player rankings, passing previous leader, Indians pitcher Trevor Bauer (5.4 points). He also passes Bauer for the lead among AL pitchers.

This is the first time Verlander has led Box-Toppers season player rankings at any point in a season since he led all players in points at the end of the 2012 season with 24.8 points. (Verlander was with the Tigers then.)

Verlander also now has 184.5 career Box-Toppers points, ninth among all players since 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began. He trails eighth-ranked player Alex Rodriguez (187.0). Verlander ranks fifth among active players in career points, fourth among active pitchers.

American League Batter of the Day—Jose Ramirez of the Indians homered, doubled and went 3-for-4, scoring once and driving in four runs, in the 6-2 win over the Marlins.

National League Batter of the Day—Ketel Marte of the Diamondbacks hit two home runs, including a three-run shot, in the 11-2 win over the Pirates. Marte went 2-for-5, scoring twice and driving in four runs.

Scoring—Paddack earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Verlander earns 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day. Ramirez and Marte each earn 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Wednesday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
