About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
List of top 100 players since 1995 at the end of the 2018 season.

American League Player of the Day—Astros pitcher Justin Verlander struck out 11 over seven innings, allowing one run, two hits and two walks, in the 5-1 win over the Tigers.

Verlander earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day, giving him 10.1 for the season, extending his lead in Box-Toppers season player rankings. He now leads second-place player, Brewers pitcher Josh Hader (8.0), by 2.1 points.

Verlander is the first player this season with 10 or more Box-Toppers points. It is his fourth straight season with 10 or more points and his 11th season with at least 10 points (he’s earned points in 14 seasons).

Verlander also has 188.2 career Box-Toppers points, rising to eighth among all players since 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began. With his points Wednesday, he passes Alex Rodriguez (187.0) on the “all-time” list and now trails seventh-ranked player Albert Pujols of the Angels (192.3). Verlander ranks fifth among active players in career points.

National League Batter of the Day—Eugenio Suarez of the Reds homered, doubled and went 3-for-5, scoring once and driving in three runs, in the 6-5, 10-inning win over the Cubs.

American League Batter of the Day—J.D. Martinez of the Red Sox homered and went 2-for-4, scoring once and driving in three runs, in the 6-5, 10-inning win over the Rockies.

Martinez edged Ronald Guzman of the Rangers as AL Batter of the Day on a tiebreaker. Guzman, who was Player of the Game in the 6-1 win over the Royals, had the same Box-Toppers game score (+2.0) as Martinez and a similar line score (HR 2-4 R 3BI), but Martinez held the tiebreaking edge because he had more walks (one vs. zero).

Rankings—Two players rise in Box-Toppers season player rankings top 10 list after earning Player of the Game honors Wednesday:

  • Brewers pitcher Josh Hader (1IP 0H 0R 0BB K Sv in the 5-2 win over the Phillies) rises from third to second place with 8.0 Box-Toppers points on the season. Hader regains the lead among NL players, passing Cody Bellinger of the Dodgers (7.2), who passed Hader Tuesday. Hader maintains his lead among NL pitchers, now ahead of Diamondbacks pitcher Zack Greinke (7.2).

  • Diamondbacks pitcher Zack Grienke (7.2IP 4H 0R 0BB 5K W in the 11-1 win over the Pirates) rises from ninth to third place with 7.2 Box-Toppers points on the season. He rises to second place among NL pitchers, behind Hader (8.0). Greinke also now has 196.4 career Box-Toppers points, fifth among all players since 1995, when player tracking began. He trails fourth-ranked player, Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia (201.4). Greinke ranks third among active players in career points, behind Sabathia and overall active leader, Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw (217.5).

Scoring—Maeda earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Verlander earns 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day. Suarez and Martinez each earn 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Wednesday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
