About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
List of top 100 players since 1995 as of the 2019 All-Star break.

American League Player of the Day—Astros pitcher Justin Verlander struck out eight over six scoreless innings, allowing four hits and two walks, in the 4-1 win over the Rangers.

Verlander earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day, giving him 26.5 for the season, maintaining his second-place ranking overall and among AL pitchers, 1.7 points behind teammate Gerrit Cole (28.2).

This is the first time Verlander has earned Player of the Game honors this season without also taking or holding the lead in Box-Toppers season player rankings since April 19, when he earned AL Player of the Day honors and ranked third overall.

Verlander becomes the second player this season to reach 25 Box-Toppers points and it is his first season with 25 points in his 14 consecutive seasons earning points. His previous best season was 2012 with the Tigers when he had 24.8 points, leading all players. His 26.5 points now ranks as the 17th-best single-season point total since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995. This is the 29th time a player has reached 25 points in a single season in Box-Toppers’ 25th season of player tracking.

Verlander also now has 204.6 career Box-Toppers points, rising to fifth place among all players since 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began. With his 1.7 points Tuesday, he passes Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia (203.4) on the “all-time” list and now trails fourth-ranked player, teammate Zack Greinke (205.1) by 0.5 points. Passing Sabathia, Verlander now ranks third among active players in career points behind Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw (226.5) and Greinke.

American League Batter of the Day—Cavan Biggio of the Blue Jays homered, tripled, doubled and went 4-for-5, scoring three times and driving in four runs, in the 8-5 win over the Orioles.

National League Batter of the Day—Miguel Rojas of the Marlins hit three doubles and went 4-for-6, driving in six runs, in the 12-6 win over the Diamondbacks.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
