Padres pitcher Blake Snell is Friday’s Box-Toppers NL Player of the Day.

National League Player of the Day—Padres pitcher Blake Snell struck out eight over 4 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing four hits and two walks, in the 4-2 win over the Diamondbacks. Snell did not earn the win, picking up a no-decision, because he did not pitch the requisite five innings for starters to earn the win.

Snell earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day and ranks third in Box-Toppers season player rankings. Snell was Box-Toppers Player of the Year in 2018 with the Rays, leading all players with 27.2 Box-Toppers points.

American League Batter of the Day—Yermin Mercedes of the White Sox doubled and went 5-for-5, scoring once and driving in four runs, in the 12-8 win over the Angels.

This is Mercedes’ Box-Toppers debut, the first time in his career he earned Player of the Game honors. Mercedes made his Major League debut Aug. 2, 2020, and was playing in his second career game.

Mercedes earns 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being AL Batter of the Day and currently ranks sixth in Box-Toppers season player rankings.

National League Batter of the Day—There is no separate NL Batter of the Day for Friday because no NL batter earned Player of the Game honors in the seven games played.

Streak—Dodgers pitcher Trevor Bauer has now earned Box-Toppers points in 10 straight seasons after earning his first Player of the Game honor of 2021 Friday.

Bauer (6.1IP 3R 4R 2BB 10K W in the 11-6 win over the Rockies) earned his first Box-Toppers points in 2012 with the Diamondbacks and now has 78.4 career Box-Toppers points. His highest finish was 2020 with the Reds, when he had 10.0 Box-Toppers points in the pandemic-shortened season, first among NL pitchers and second among all players.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
