Rays pitcher Tyler Glasnow is Box-Toppers Player of the Day in Thursday’s opening day games.
Also Thursday, Astros pitcher Zack Greinke has now earned Box-Toppers points in 15 straight seasons after earning Player of the Game honors.
Player of the Day—Glasnow struck out six over six scoreless innings, allowing one hit and no walks, in the 1-0 win over the Marlins. Glasnow did not earn the win, picking up a no-decision, because the game was in a scoreless tie when he exited.
Glasnow earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, the first points awarded in the 2021 season, taking the early lead in Box-Toppers season player rankings. Glasnow had 8.0 Box-Toppers points in 2020, eighth overall and fourth among American League pitchers.
National League Player of the Day—Chris Owings of the Rockies tripled and went 3-for-3, scoring three times and driving in one run, in the 8-5 win over the Dodgers.
Owings earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day. It is his first Player of the Game honor in more than four years; he last earned Player of the Game honors Sept. 30, 2016, with the Diamondbacks. He now has 8.2 career Box-Toppers points since 2014.
American League Batter of the Day—Jorge Soler of the Royals homered and went 2-for-2, scoring twice and driving in two runs, in the 14-10 win over the Rangers.
Soler earns 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being AL Batter of the Day. He had 0.0 points in 2020 and 10.2 in 2019, fourth among AL batters.
National League Batter of the Day—There is no separate NL Batter of the Day for Thursday because the NL Player of the Day is batter Chris Owings.

Streak—Astros pitcher Zack Grienke has now earned Box-Toppers points in 15 straight seasons—tied for the fourth-longest active streak—after earning his first Player of the Game honor of the season.
Greinke (6IP 3H 0R 0BB 4K W in the 8-1 win over the Athletics) earned his first Box-Toppers points in 2004 with the Royals. However, he earned no points in 2006, so his 15-season streak began in 2007 with the Royals.

Greinke’s best season was 2009 with the Royals when he had 21.5 Box-Toppers points, first among all players. He’s had three seasons with 20 or more Box-Toppers points, including 2009, 2015 with the Dodgers (20.7) and 2017 with the Diamondbacks (20.1). In 2020, he had 2.0 Box-Toppers points. About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
