About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
The first phase of voting is open now and continues until June 24. Here is more information about how that works. The All-Star Game is Tuesday, July 13, at Coors Field in Denver.
Box-Toppers offers two perspectives on All-Star teams—the first includes the Box-Toppers points leaders at each position for the current 2021 season. The second includes the points leaders at each position for the combined 2020 and 2021 seasons.
The 2020 season was shortened by the coronavirus pandemic to 60 games per team. So far in the 2021 season, teams have played an average of about 68 games each.
The chart above shows the leaders at each position in both the American League and National League for 2021 and 2020-21. There are 16 players who make both the 2021 and 2020-21 All-Star teams, including:
AL first base—Jose Abreu, White Sox
AL shortstop—Xander Bogaerts, Red Sox
AL third base—Rafael Devers, Red Sox
AL catcher—Martin Maldonado, Astros
AL outfield—Randal Grichuk, Blue Jays
AL designated hitter—J.D. Martinez, Red Sox
AL starting pitcher—Gerrit Cole, Yankees
AL starting pitcher—Tyler Glasnow, Rays
AL closing pitcher—Matt Barnes, Red Sox
NL third base—Manny Machado, Padres
NL outfield—Adam Duvall, Marlins
NL outfield—Jesse Winker, Reds
NL outfield—Nick Castellanos, Reds
NL starting pitcher—Jacob deGrom, Mets
NL starting pitcher—Brandon Woodruff, Brewers
NL closing pitcher—Craig Kimbrel, Cubs
The Box-Toppers National League team has 13 positions—the customary five infield spots, three for outfield, four for starting pitchers plus one spot for closing pitcher. The Box-Toppers American League team has 14 spots with the addition of the designated hitter.
Fans don’t get to pick pitchers for the All-Star Game (which doesn’t make sense), but Box-Toppers lists the top pitchers by league in Box-Toppers points for both 2021 and 2020-21.
About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
