About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
The first phase of voting is open now and continues until June 24. Here is more information about how that works. The All-Star Game is Tuesday, July 13, at Coors Field in Denver.
Box-Toppers offers two perspectives on All-Star teams—the first includes the Box-Toppers points leaders at each position for the current 2021 season. The second includes the points leaders at each position for the combined 2020 and 2021 seasons.
The 2020 season was shortened by the coronavirus pandemic to 60 games per team. So far in the 2021 seasons, teams have played an average of about 55 games each. So currently, both seasons are about equal length.
The chart above shows the leaders at each position in both leagues for both 2021 and 2020-21. There are 12 players who make both the 2021 and 2020-21 All-Star teams, including:
Rays pitcher Tyler Glasnow, the top American League starting pitcher, who leads all players in Box-Toppers points in both 2021 (10.7) and 2020-21 (18.7).
Brewers pitcher Brandon Woodruff, the top National League starting pitcher, who leads all NL players in Box-Toppers points in both 2021 (10.4) and 2020-21 (17.4).
Adam Duvall of the Marlins, the top NL outfielder, who leads NL batters in Box-Toppers points in both 2021 (4.5) and 2020-21 (8.5).
J.D. Martinez of the Red Sox, the top AL designated hitter, who leads AL batters in Box-Toppers points for 2021 (6.2) and all AL designated hitters over 2020-21 (6.2).
Jose Abreu of the White Sox, the top AL first baseman, who leads AL batters in Box-Toppers points over 2020-21 (10.0) and all AL first basemen in 2021 (5.5).
The other seven players who lead at their positions in Box-Toppers points over both 2021 and 2020-21:
AL shortstop—Xander Bogaerts of the Red Sox, 5.5 points in 2021, 6.5 over 2020-21.
AL third base—Rafael Devers of the Red Sox, 4.0 points in 2021, 6.5 over 2020-21.
AL outfielder—Randal Grichuk of the Blue Jays, 3.0 points in 2021 (first among AL outfielders), 6.0 over 2020-21 (second among AL outfielders).
AL starting pitcher—Gerrit Cole of the Yankees, 10.7 points in 2021 (second among AL starting pitchers), 18.1 over 2020-21 (second among AL starting pitchers).
AL starting pitcher—Lance Lynn of the White Sox, 7.7 points in 2021 (third among AL starting pitchers), 16.8 over 2020-21 (fourth among AL starting pitchers).
AL closing pitcher—Matt Barnes of the Red Sox, 4.0 points in 2021, 5.0 over 2020-21.
NL closing pitcher—Craig Kimbrel of the Cubs, 6.7 points in 2021, 7.7 over 2020-21.
The Box-Toppers National League team has 13 positions—the customary five infield spots, three for outfield, four for starting pitchers plus one spot for closing pitcher. The Box-Toppers American League team has 14 spots with the addition of the designated hitter.
Fans don’t get to pick pitchers for the All-Star Game (which doesn’t make sense), but Box-Toppers lists the top pitchers by league in Box-Toppers points for both 2021 and 2020-21.
The Boston Red Sox have four players on both Box-Toppers’ All-Star teams with four in 2021 and four in 2020-21.
About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
