About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations

Also Wednesday, J.D. Martinez of the Red Sox extended his season Box-Toppers points lead among American League batters and Adam Duvall of the Marlins regained the 2021 Box-Toppers points lead among National League batters.

Player of the Day—Albies hit two home runs, including a three-run shot, in the 20-2 win over the Mets. Albies went 5-for-6, scoring four times and driving in seven runs.

Albies earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 4.0 for the season, 101st among all players and 11th among NL batters.

Albies achieved the highest-ranking Box-Toppers game score (+10.0) for a batter earning Player of the Game honors in 2021. On April 13, Adam Duvall also had a +10.0 Box-Toppers game score when he earned NL Batter of the Day honors (2HR 2B 4-5 4R 7BI in the 14-9 win over the Braves), but Albies game score ranks higher because he had more at bats—six vs. five.

While Albies’ +10.0 game score is the highest-ranking for a batter earning Player of the Game honors in 2021, it ranks as 103rd highest-ranking game score for all of 2021’s Player of the Game winners—pitchers have the top 102 game scores in the 1,198 games completed so far, led by +22.0 by Jacob deGrom of the Mets on April 23 (CG 2H 0R 0BB 14K W in the 6-0 win over the Nationals).

Albies is just the third batter this season to earn overall Player of the Day honors, after Max Stassi of the Nationals on June 7 and Fernando Tatis Jr. of the Padres on June 25. On the other 88 days of the season so far, pitchers have won overall Player of the Day honors.

American League Player of the Day—Athletics pitcher Chris Bassitt struck out seven over seven scoreless innings, allowing three hits and one walk, in the 3-1 win over the Rangers.

Bassitt earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day, giving him 8.7 for the season, 14th among all players and fourth among AL pitchers.

Both Bassitt and Albies had a Box-Toppers game score of +10.0, but Albies beat Bassitt for overall Player of the Day honors because in cases of game score ties, batters rank ahead of pitchers.

Athletics pitcher Chris Bassitt is Wednesday’s Box-Toppers AL Player of the Day.

American League Batter of the Day—Harold Castro of the Tigers doubled and went 3-for-3, scoring twice and driving in three runs, in the 9-4, seven-inning win over the Indians.

Harold Castro of the Tigers is Wednesday’s Box-Toppers AL Batter of the Day.

National League Batter of the Day—There is no separate NL Batter of the Day for Wednesday because the overall Player of the Day is NL batter Ozzie Albies.

Notable—J.D. Martinez of the Red Sox extended his 2021 Box-Toppers points lead among AL batters after earning Player of the Game honors Wednesday for the second day in a row.

Martinez (HR 1-3 2R 3BI in the 6-2 win over the Royals) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 8.2 for the season, ranking 17th overall. He extends his lead over second-place AL batter Xander Bogaerts of the Red Sox (6.5). This is the second straight day Martinez has earned Player of the Game honors after doing it Tuesday (2B 2-2 R 4BI in the 7-6 win over the Royals).

J.D. Martinez of the Red Sox is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Wednesday’s win over the Royals.

Also notable—Adam Duvall of the Marlins regains the 2021 Box-Toppers points lead among NL batters after earning Player of the Game honors Wednesday.

Duvall (HR 2B 3-5 3R BI in the 11-6 win over the Phillies) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 7.0 for the season, ranking 26th overall. He passes previous NL batting leader Nick Castellanos of the Reds. Though both Duvall and Castellanos have 7.0 points for the season, Duvall ranks higher because he has more 2020 points—4.0 vs. 1.0.

Castellanos only passed Duvall on Monday, holding the lead two days. Duvall ranks second among all batters in 2021 Box-Toppers points, behind only Martinez (8.2).

Adam Duvall of the Marlins is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Wednesday’s win over the Phillies.

Scoring—Albies earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Bassitt earns 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day. Castro earns 1.5 points for being AL Batter of the Day. All of Wednesday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
