Mariners pitcher Logan Gilbert is Thursday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day.
Gilbert struck out eight over seven scoreless innings, allowing one hit and no walks, in the 4-0 win over the Yankees.
Gilbert earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 3.0 for the season, 184th among all players and 65th among American League pitchers.
National League Player of the Day—Dodgers pitcher Julio Urias struck out nine over seven innings, allowing one run, five hits and two walks, in the 6-1 win over the Marlins.
Urias earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 9.4 for the season, 15th among all players and 12th among NL pitchers.
National League Batter of the Day—Brad Miller of the Phillies hit three home runs and went 3-for-5, scoring three times and driving in five runs, in the 8-0 win over the Cubs.
American League Batter of the Day—Franmil Reyes of the Indians hit a walk-off three-run homer and went 1-for-4, scoring twice and driving in three runs, in the 7-4 win over the Royals.
Notable—Daniel Camarena of the Padres became the second pitcher this season to earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors for his performance as a batter.
Camarena hit a grand slam (HR 1-1 R 4BI) in the 9-8 win over the Nationals. He pitched two innings, relieving starter Yu Darvish, and batted for himself, contributing to the Padres’ seven-run fourth inning, so he could continue to pitch the fifth inning. He had a Box-Toppers game score of +5.0 for batting and -2.0 for pitching (2IP 2H 2R 0BB 2K ND).
He is the second pitcher to win Player of the Game honors for batting this season after Shohei Ohtani of the Angels did it April 26. In 2019, pitchers earned Player of the Game honors for batting six times. In 2020, there were no pitchers earning Player of the Game honors for batting because baseball employed the universal designated hitter in both leagues as part of special pandemic rules.
This was also Camarena’s Box-Toppers debut, the first time in his career he earned Player of the Game honors. Camarena made his Major League debut June 19 and was playing in his second career game.
