About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations

Rankings—Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole extended his lead in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Friday.

Cole (6IP 6H 0R 2BB 9K W in the 8-2 win over the Athletics) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 20.4 for the season, extending his lead over second-place player, Dodgers pitcher Max Scherzer (17.4). He also leads AL pitchers ahead of second-place Shohei Ohtani of the Angels (15.1).

Cole becomes the first player this season to reach 20 Box-Toppers points. It is his second season with 20 or more points. In 2019 with the Astros, he had 32.2 points, first among all players. That was the fourth-highest single-season total since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995. On this date (Aug. 27) in 2019, Cole had 20.8 points, meaning he’s now just behind that season’s pace. However, Cole earned Player of the Game honors seven more times in 2019, picking up 11.4 more points, from Aug. 28 to the end of the season on Sept. 29.

Cole now has 120.9 career Box-Toppers points, 46th among all players since 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began. He trails 45th-ranked player, Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom (122.1). Cole ranks 15th among active players in career points, fourth among active AL pitchers.

Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Friday’s win over the Athletics.

Scoring—Musgrove earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Lopez earns 1.7 points for being AL Player of the Day. Soler and Arauz each earn 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Friday’s other Player of the Game winners (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
