Blue Jays pitcher Alek Manoah is Monday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day.
Manoah struck out 10 over eight scoreless innings, allowing one hit and no walks, in the 8-1 win over the Rays.
Manoah earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 8.7 for the season, 59th among all players and 22nd among American League pitchers.
National League Player of the Day—Marlins pitcher Sandy Alcantara struck out seven over eight scoreless innings, allowing one hit and no walks, in the 3-0 win over the Nationals.
Alcantara took a no-hitter into the seventh inning before giving up the first hit with two outs.
Alcantara earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day, giving him 9.7 for the season, 40th among all players and 24th among NL pitchers.
American League Batter of the Day—Jose Siri of the Astros hit two home runs and went 4-for-5, scoring three times and driving in five runs, in the 15-1 win over the Rangers.
This was Siri’s Box-Toppers debut, the first time in his career he earned Player of the Game honors. Siri made his Major League debut Sept. 3 and was playing in his sixth career game.
National League Batter of the Day—There is no separate NL Batter of the Day for Monday because no NL batter earned Player of the Game honors in the eight games completed.
Notable—Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw has the most 2021 Box-Toppers points among the eight who won Player of the Game honors Monday.
Kershaw (4.1IP 4H R BB 5K ND in the 5-1 win over the Diamondbacks) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 12.4 for the season, 19th among all players and 12th among NL pitchers.
This was Kershaw’s first appearance since July 3 and his first Player of the Game honor since June 27, after sitting out more than two months with elbow inflammation. When Kershaw last earned Player of the Game honors, he ranked sixth overall and fourth among NL pitchers with 11.4 Box-Toppers points. It was also the instance in which Kershaw rose to second place on the Box-Toppers “all-time” career points list (tracking began in 1995), passing Pedro Martinez, 246.6-244.8.
Kershaw now has 247.6 career Box-Toppers points, still second among all players since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995. He trails Randy Johnson (282.5) on the “all-time” list. (It should be noted that Johnson would have an estimated 380 Box-Toppers points if his entire career from 1988 were tracked.) Kershaw leads active players in career points ahead of second-place player, Dodgers pitcher Max Scherzer (224.3).
Also notable—Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright now has 12.0 Box-Toppers points in 2021 after earning Player of the Game honors Monday.
Wainwright (6IP 4H 0R 3BB 4K W in the 7-0 win over the Mets) ranks 20th overall in 2021 points and 13th among NL pitchers.
He also now has 142.3 career Box-Toppers points, 30th among all players since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995. With his 1.0 point Monday, he passes Jake Peavy (141.8) on the “all-time” list and now trails 29th-ranked player, Red Sox pitcher Chris Sale (143.6). Wainwright ranks 10th among active players in career points, fifth among active NL pitchers.
