About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations

Also notable—Yankees pitcher Gerrit Cole fell short of earning Player of the Game honors and reclaiming the overall lead in Box-Toppers season player rankings.

Cole, second place overall with 22.4 Box-Toppers points in 2021, had a chance to reclaim the lead Tuesday over Dodgers pitcher Max Scherzer (23.1), who rose past Cole to the top spot Sunday.

And while the Yankees won 7-2 Tuesday over the Orioles, Cole just missed earning the Player of the Game honor which would have enabled him to pass Scherzer. Instead, middle reliever Michael King earned Player of the Game honors (3IP 0H 0R BB 2K ND) with a Box-Toppers game score of +4.0. Cole had a game score of +3.0 (5IP 4H R 3BB 7K W).

Though King did not pick up the decision, he qualified to be automatically considered for Player of the Game honors because he pitched at least three innings. (Pitchers with fewer than three innings pitched who do not earn a win or a save must have at least the same innings pitched and a higher Box-Toppers game score as the pitcher who otherwise would be the game’s top player to earn Player of the Game honors.)

In addition, this was King’s Box-Toppers debut, the first time in his career he earned Player of the Game honors. King made his Major League debut Sept. 27, 2019, and was playing in his 26th career game.

Debut—In addition to King, two other players made their Box-Toppers debut Tuesday, each with their first career Player of the Game honor:

  • Rays pitcher Drew Rasmussen (5IP 2H 0R BB 3K W in the 2-0 win over the Blue Jays) made his Major League debut Aug. 19, 2020, and was playing in his 45th career game.

  • Kyle Isbel of the Royals (HR 2B 3-4 3R 2BI in the 10-7 win over the Athletics) made his Major League debut April 1 and was playing in his 14th career game.

Scoring—Lyles earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Fedde earns 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day. Jeffers and O’Neill each earn 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Tuesday’s other Player of the Game winners (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
