Phillies relief pitcher Seranthony Dominguez is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Friday’s World Series Game 1.
The Philadelphia Phillies win 6-5 in 10 innings to take a 1-0 lead over the Houston Astros in the best-of-seven game series.
Dominguez struck out three over 1 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and no walks. Dominguez was the Phillies’ next-to-last pitcher, pitching in the eighth and ninth innings and picked up the win as the Phillies took the lead in the top of the 10th inning.
Dominguez earned 3.0 Box-Toppers points in 2022, 339th overall, 98th among National League pitchers and 14th among NL closers. This is his second Box-Toppers Player of the Game honor of the 2022 postseason, after doing it Oct. 21 in the NL Championship Series Game 3 win over the Padres.
Dominguez had a Box-Toppers game score of +3.2, highest among Phillies players Friday.
Catcher J.T. Realmuto, who hit the solo homer in the top of the 10th inning to give Philadelphia the 6-5 lead, had the highest game score among Phillies batters, +2.0 (HR 2B 2-4 R 3BI).
Both starting pitchers, who each led their teams in 2022 Box-Toppers points, fared poorly Friday. Starting pitcher Aaron Nola had a -8.9 game score, lowest among Phillies players (4.1IP 6H 5R 2BB 5K ND). Astros starting pitcher Justin Verlander had a -8.0 game score (5IP 6H 5R 2BB 5K ND). Verlander led all players in 2022 with 26.0 Box-Toppers points. Nola was ninth among NL pitchers in 2022 with 16.0 points.
The highest Box-Toppers game score in Friday’s game was +4.0 by Astros right fielder Kyle Tucker (2HR 3-5 2R 4BI). But of course he does not earn Player of the Game honors because the Astros lost.
