Astros pitcher Cristian Javier is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Wednesday’s World Series Game 4.

Javier led a group of four Houston Astros pitchers in a combined no-hitter—the second in World Series history after Don Larsen’s 1956 perfect game—winning 5-0 over the Philadelphia Phillies to tie the best-of-seven game series at 2-2.

Javier struck out nine over six scoreless and hitless innings, walking two.

Javier earned 15.7 Box-Toppers points in 2022, 16th overall and seventh among AL pitchers. This was his second Player of the Game honor of the 2022 postseason. He also did it Oct. 22 in the ALCS Game 3 win over the Yankees. He also started the Oct. 11 ALDS Game 1 win over the Mariners.

Javier had a Box-Toppers game score of +13.0, highest among Astros players Wednesday. Javier exited after throwing 97 pitches. The three Astros relievers who completed the no-hitter had the next three-highest ranking game scores:

  • Bryan Abreu, who pitched the seventh inning, had a +4.0 game score (1IP 0H 0R 0BB 3K ND).

  • Rafael Montero, who pitched the eighth inning, had a +2.0 game score (1IP 0H 0R 0BB K ND).

  • Ryan Pressley, who pitched the ninth inning, had +1.0 game score (1IP 0H 0R BB K ND).

Astros top batter was right fielder Kyle Tucker with 0.0 game score (2B 1-2 0R BI). Phillies starting pitcher Aaron Nola had a -5.0 game score (4IP 7H 3R 0BB 4K L).

Four Astros combined to no-hit the Phillies Wednesday, only the second no-hitter in World Series history after Don Larsen’s 1956 perfect game.

Javier and the three Astros relievers pitched the first combined no-hitter in World Series history. The only other World Series no-hitter was 66 years ago in  Game 5 of the 1956 World Series, when Yankees pitcher Don Larsen pitched a perfect game in the 2-0 win over the Brooklyn Dodgers. Larsen allowed no baserunners. The four Astros Wednesday allowed three baserunners on walks.

World Series Game 5, Astros at Phillies, series tied, 2-2

Thursday’s pitching matchups (for more, see matchups chart below):

Astros—Justin Verlander, 26.0 Box-Toppers points, first among all players and first among AL pitchers.

Phillies—Noah Syndergaard, 3.0 Box-Toppers points in 2022, 335th overall and 96th among NL pitchers.

Verlander has made three starts this postseason, earning Player of the Game honors once—in the Oct. 19 AL Championship Series Game 1 win over the Yankees. But Verlander has had two uncharacteristically bad starts this postseason:

  • Oct. 11 in the AL Division Series Game 1 win over the Mariners, in which he had a -16.0 Box-Toppers game score (4IP 10H 6R BB 3K ND).

  • Oct. 28 in the World Series Game 1 loss to the Phillies, in which he had a -8.0 game score (5IP 6H 5R 2BB 5K ND).

Syndergaard has made three postseason appearances, earning Player of the Game honors once in his only start, in the Oct. 15 NLDS Game 4 win over the Braves. He also appeared in relief in both the Oct. 12 NLDS Game 2 loss to the Braves and the Oct. 22 NLCS Game 4 win over the Padres.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
