Angels pitcher Reid Detmers is Tuesday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day, pitching a no-hitter.

Detmers pitched the complete game, no-hit shutout, striking out two and walking one, in the 12-0 win over the Rays.

He retired the first 15 batters he faced before giving up a walk in the sixth innings and threw 108 pitches over nine innings. He allowed only two baserunners—another batter reached first on an error in the seventh inning.

It is the second no-hitter of the season and first completed by a single pitcher. On April 29, Mets pitcher Tylor Megill and four relievers pitched a combined no-hitter against the Phillies.

Detmers earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 3.0 for the season, 17th among American League pitchers.

This is Detmer’s third career Player of the Game honor. He made his Box-Toppers debut Aug. 15, 2021, and also earned Player of the Game honors April 28. His rookie status is intact for 2022.

Detmers had a Box-Toppers game score Tuesday of +10.0, same as two other Player of the Game winners—Astros pitcher Justin Verlander and Orioles pitcher Kyle Bradish. But Detmers won overall Player of the Day honors because he held the tiebreaker by having more innings pitched (nine), while Verlander had eight and Bradish had seven.

Brewers pitcher Freddy Peralta is Tuesday’s Box-Toppers NL Player of the Day.

National League Player of the Day—Brewers pitcher Freddy Peralta struck out one over 5 2/3 innings, allowing one run, four hits and one walk, in the 5-4 win over the Reds.

Peralta earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day, giving him 3.4 for the season, 11th among NL pitchers.

Justin Turner of the Dodgers is Tuesday’s Box-Toppers NL Batter of the Day.

National League Batter of the Day—Justin Turner of the Dodgers hit three doubles and went 4-for-5, scoring twice and driving in four runs, in the 11-1 win over the Pirates.

Turner earns 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being NL Batter of the Day, giving him 2.5 for the season, ninth among NL batters.

Corey Seager of the Rangers is Tuesday’s Box-Toppers AL Batter of the Day.

American League Batter of the Day—Corey Seager of the Rangers hit two home runs and went 2-for-3, scoring twice and driving in two runs, in the 6-4 win over the Royals.

Astros pitcher Justin Verlander is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Tuesday’s win over the Twins.

Notable—Astros pitcher Justin Verlander has the most 2022 Box-Toppers points among Tuesday’s 16 Player of the Game winners.

Verlander (8IP H 0R 2BB 5K W in the 5-0 win over the Twins) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 4.0 for the season, 22nd among all players and eighth among AL pitchers. Verlander had a no-hitter going into the eighth inning before giving up his only hit and threw 89 pitches through eight innings. Verlander also just missed winning overall Player of the Day honors, which would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points instead of 1.0, but two other AL pitchers also had Box-Toppers game scores of +10.0 and Verlander ranked lower than Reid Detmers, who was able to complete his no-hitter (Detmers had more innings pitched than Verlander—nine vs. eight).

Verlander now has 210.6 career Box-Toppers points, sixth-most among all players since 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began. He trails fifth-ranked player, Royals pitcher Zack Greinke (217.8) by 7.2 points. Verlander ranks fourth among active players in career points, second among active AL pitchers behind Greinke.

Debut—Five players made their Box-Toppers debut Tuesday, each with their first career Player of the Game honor:

Orioles pitcher Kyle Bradish is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Tuesday’s win over the Cardinals.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
