About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
Notable—Shohei Ohtani of the Angels extends his lead in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Monday.
Ohtani (2HR 3-4 3R 5BI in the 11-3 win over the Rays) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 8.0 for the season, extending his lead over second-place player, Padres pitcher Joe Musgrove (6.0).
This is Ohtani’s fifth Player of the Game honor of 2022 and his third as a designated hitter. He earned the other two as a starting pitcher. Because he’s earned more than 25 percent of his Player of the Game honors as both a batter and pitcher, he qualifies to be ranked in both categories. He leads AL pitchers ahead of second-place Dylan Cease of the White Sox (5.0) and leads AL batters ahead of second-place Jose Ramirez of the Guardians (4.2).
Ohtani has 4.0 points as a batter and 4.0 points as a pitcher, neither enough to lead the AL categories separately, but enough to lead both when combined.
Ohtani earned 16.1 Box-Toppers points in 2021 but was ranked only as a pitcher because he earned such an overwhelming majority of his Player of the Game honors as a pitcher.
Also notable—Giants pitcher Carlos Rodon rises to seventh place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Monday.
Rodon (6IP 6H 2R 2BB 12K W in the 8-5 win over the Rockies) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 5.0 for the season, fifth among NL pitchers.
Debut—Diamondbacks pitcher Kyle Nelson made his Box-Toppers debut Monday with his first career Player of the Game honor.
Nelson (1IP H 0R 0BB 2K W in the 4-3 win over the Marlins) made his Major League debut Sept. 10, 2020, and was playing in his 23rd career game.
Scoring—Cortes earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Hendricks earns 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day. Naylor and Drury each earn 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Monday’s other Player of the Game winners (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.
About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
