Rays pitcher Corey Kluber is Wednesday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day, rising to fourth place in season player rankings.
Kluber struck out seven over six scoreless innings, allowing three hits and one walk, in the 3-0 win over the Athletics. Kluber did not earn the win, picking up a no-decision, because the game was in a scoreless tie when he exited.
Kluber earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 5.0 for the season. He ranks second among American League pitchers in 2022 Box-Toppers points, trailing Shohei Ohtani of the Angels. Though both Ohtani and Kluber have 5.0 Box-Toppers points in 2022, Ohtani ranks ahead because he had more 2021 Box-Toppers points—16.1 vs. 5.0.
Kluber now has 119.1 career Box-Toppers points, rising to 47th among all players since 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began. With his 2.0 points Wednesday, Kluber passes three players on the “all-time” list—Barry Zito (117.4), Carlos Delgado (118.7) and Cliff Lee (119.1). He now trails 46th-ranked player, Mets pitcher Jacob deGrom (122.1). Kluber ranks 14th among active players in career points, fifth among active AL pitchers.
National League Player of the Day—Rowdy Tellez of the Brewers hit two home runs, including a grand slam, and doubled, in the 18-4 win over the Reds. Tellez went 4-for-6, scoring twice and driving in eight runs.
Tellez earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day, his first points of the season, and ranks 10th among NL batters.
American League Batter of the Day—Alex Bregman of the Astros doubled and went 3-for-3, scoring twice and driving in three runs, in the 7-2 win over the Mariners.
National League Batter of the Day—There is no separate NL Batter of the Day for Wednesday because the overall NL Player of the Day is batter Rowdy Tellez.
Notable—Cardinals pitcher Adam Wainwright now has 145.3 career Box-Toppers points after earning Player of the Game honors Wednesday.
Wainwright (7IP H 0R BB 2K W in the 10-0 win over the Royals) rises to 29th place among all players in career points since 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began. With his 1.0 point Wednesday, he passes Red Sox pitcher Chris Sale (144.6) on the “all-time” list and now trails 28th-ranked player David Ortiz (145.9). Wainwright ranks seventh among active players in career points, third among active NL pitchers, behind Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers (250.6) and Max Scherzer of the Mets (228.3).
Wainwright now has 3.0 Box-Toppers points in 2022, 13th among NL pitchers.
