About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
Ohtani struck out 11 over seven scoreless innings, allowing six hits and no walks, in the 8-0 win over the Red Sox.
Ohtani earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 7.0 for the season. He rises from third place to first in Box-Toppers season player rankings, passing previous leader, Mets pitcher Tylor Megill (5.7 points).
This is the second time Ohtani has led player rankings this season. He took the lead April 20 before losing it to Megill on April 29.
Ohtani maintains his lead among both American League pitchers and batters in 2022 Box-Toppers points. He leads AL pitchers ahead of second-place Corey Kluber of the Rays (5.0) and leads AL batters ahead of second-place Jose Ramirez of the Guardians (4.2).
Ohtani qualifies as both a pitcher and a batter in Box-Toppers rankings—he’s earned Player of the Game honors four times in 2022, two as a designated hitter and two as a starting pitcher. To qualify to be ranked at a position, a player must have more than 25 percent of their Player of the Game honors at that position.
In 2021, Ohtani ranked only as a pitcher since he earned the overwhelming majority of his Player of the Game honors (9 of 12) as a starting pitcher vs. as a designated hitter. Ohtani had 16.1 Box-Toppers points in 2021, third among AL pitchers. That would have been more than enough to also lead AL batters, ahead of Jose Ramirez of the Indians with 13.0 points, but Ohtani did not rank as a batter in 2021 Box-Toppers points.
National League Player of the Day—Willy Adames of the Brewers hit two home runs and went 2-for-4, scoring three times and driving in four runs, in the 10-5 win over the Reds.
Adames earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day, giving him 3.4 for the season, 20th among all players and third among NL batters, behind C.J. Cron of the Rockies (4.0) and Michael Chavis of the Pirates (4.0).
This is the second straight day a Brewers batter has earned NL Player of the Day honors. Rowdy Tellez did it Wednesday (2HR 2B 4-6 2R 8BI in the 18-4 win over the Reds).
American League Batter of the Day—Ryan Mountcastle of the Orioles hit two home runs and went 2-for-4, scoring twice and driving in two runs, in the 5-3 win over the Twins.
National League Batter of the Day—There is no separate NL Batter of the Day for Wednesday because the overall NL Player of the Day is batter Willy Adames.
Scoring—Ohtani earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Adames earns 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day. Mountcastle earns 1.5 points for being AL Batter of the Day. All of Thursday’s other Player of the Game winners (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.
About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
