National League pitchers—Padres pitcher Joe Musgrove rises this week to lead the category with 8.7 Box-Toppers points, passing last week’s leader Sandy Alcantara of the Marlins (8.7), who falls to second place. Though both Musgrove and Alcantara have 8.7 Box-Toppers points on the season, Musgrove ranks higher because he has more 2021 Box-Toppers points—16.1 vs. 9.7. Musgrove ranks fifth overall.
National League batters—Pete Alonso of the Mets leads for the second week with 9.2 Box-Toppers points, ahead of second-place Mookie Betts of the Dodgers (6.5). Alonso ranks second among all players and led overall player rankings from Saturday until Thursday, when McClanahan took the lead.
American League batters—Shohei Ohtani of the Angels leads the category for the eighth straight week with 9.0 Box-Toppers points, ahead of second-place Ty France of the Mariners (6.0). Ohtani ranks third among all players.
Ohtani’s earned Player of the Game honors six times so far this season, three times as a designated hitter and three times as a starting pitcher. He has 4.0 points as a batter and 5.0 points as a pitcher.
Ohtani earned 16.1 Box-Toppers points in 2021 but was ranked only as a pitcher because he earned such an overwhelming majority of his Player of the Game honors as a pitcher.
