Matt Carpenter of the Yankees is Sunday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day.

Also Sunday, Astros pitcher Justin Verlander rises to second place in Box-Toppers season player rankings, becoming the second player to reach 10.0 Box-Toppers points this season.

Player of the Day—Carpenter hit two home runs, including a three-run shot, and doubled, in the 18-4 win over the Cubs. Carpenter went 3-for-4, scoring three times and driving in seven runs.

Carpenter earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, his first points of the season, and ranks 188th among all players and 31st among American League batters.

Carpenter had a Box-Toppers game score Sunday of +9.0, which is third-best among all batters who have earned Player of the Game honors so far in 2022. The two higher-ranked game scores by batters earning Player of the Game this season:

Carpenter’s +9.0 game score was the same as two other Sunday Player of the Game winners. But because in cases of game score ties, batters rank ahead of pitchers, Carpenter won overall Player of the Day honors ahead of the two pitchers with +9.0 game scores—Giants pitcher Carlos Rodon (6IP 2H 0R 3BB 8K W in the 2-0 win over the Dodgers) and Blue Jays pitcher Ross Stripling (6IP H 0R 0BB 4K W in the 6-0 win over the Tigers). Rodon earned 1.7 Box-Toppers points as National League Player of the Day. Stripling earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point as Player of the Game.

Giants pitcher Carlos Rodon is Sunday’s Box-Toppers NL Player of the Day.

National League Player of the Day—Giants pitcher Carlos Rodon struck out eight over six scoreless innings, allowing two hits and three walks, in the 2-0 win over the Dodgers.

Rodon earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day, giving him 6.7 for the season, 15th among all players and fifth among NL pitchers.

Adam Duvall of the Braves is Sunday’s Box-Toppers NL Batter of the Day.

National League Batter of the Day—Adam Duvall of the Braves hit two home runs and went 2-for-3, scoring twice and driving in three runs, in the 5-3 win over the Pirates.

American League Batter of the Day—There is no separate AL Batter of the Day for Sunday because the overall Player of the Day is AL batter Matt Carpenter.

Astros pitcher Justin Verlander is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Sunday’s win over the Marlins.

Rankings—Astros pitcher Justin Verlander rises from fifth to second place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Sunday.

Verlander (7IP 3H 4R 0ER BB 5K W in the 9-4 win over the Marlins) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 10.0 for the season, trailing only Rays pitcher Shane McClanahan (10.7). Verlander also trails McClanahan for second place among AL pitchers.

This is Verlander’s 12th season with 10.0 or more Box-Toppers points in a season and his first since 2019, when he had 27.5 Box-Toppers points, second among all players.

Verlander now has 216.6 career Box-Toppers points, sixth among all players since 1995, when Box-Toppers tracking began. He trails fifth-ranked player, Royals pitcher Zack Greinke (217.8) by 1.2 points. Greinke has no points this season, has been on the injured list, but is expected to begin a minor-league rehab assignment this week. Verlander ranks fourth among active players in career points, second among active AL pitchers, behind Greinke.

Red Sox pitcher Kutter Crawford is Box-Toppers Player of the Game in Sunday’s win over the Mariners.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
