He becomes the sixth player to reach 10 Box-Toppers points in 2022. It is his second straight season with 10 or more points. He earned 14.4 points in 2021 with the White Sox, fifth among AL pitchers.

Nolan Gorman of the Cardinals is Tuesday’s Box-Toppers NL Batter of the Day.

Debut—Austin Wynns of the Giants made his Box-Toppers debut Tuesday with his first career Player of the Game honor.

Wynns (HR 2B 3-4 2R 4BI in the 12-10 win over the Braves) made his Major League debut June 5, 2018, and was playing in his 125th career game.

Notable—Batters earned Player of the Game honors in 11 of the 15 games Tuesday, an unusually large number in a season in which pitchers are trending toward record-setting dominance.

Through the games of June 16, batters had won 37.6 percent of all Player of the Game honors (358 in 952 total games), while pitchers won 62.4 percent. That’s below last year’s near-record low share for batters and below the all-time record-low for share of Player of the Game honors won by batters (39.14 percent in 2014). Last year, batters won just 39.15 percent of all Player of the Game honors, the second-lowest in any season since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995.

But Tuesday, batters nearly doubled their season average share of Player of the Game honors earned, even if for one day, to 73.3 percent of all games.

Shohei Ohtani did not earn Player of the Game honors despite impressive performance Tuesday because the Angels lost.

Also notable—Shohei Ohtani of the Angels recorded a Box-Toppers game score Tuesday of +9.0, which would have been the third-highest for a batter earning Player of the Game honors this season. However, Ohtani did not earn Player of the Game honors because the Angels lost.

Ohtani (2HR 3-4 2R 8BI in the 12-11, 11-inning loss to the Royals) would not only have been Box-Toppers Player of the Game had the Angels won, he would have been AL Batter of the Day, earning 1.5 total Box-Toppers points. That would have been enough to propel him back into the overall lead in Box-Toppers season player rankings.

Despite Ohtani’s impressive performance, he earns no Box-Toppers points. But he still ranks second overall in Box-Toppers season player rankings with 11.0 Box-Toppers points, first among both AL batters and pitchers.

With the Royals beating the Angels, Player of the Game was Carlos Santana of the Royals (HR 2B 4-5 2R 5BI), with a Box-Toppers game score of +6.0.

Scoring—Cease earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Fedde earns 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day. Paredes and Gorman each earn 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Tuesday’s other Player of the Game winners (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
