Red Sox pitcher Rich Hill is Saturday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day.
Also Saturday, two of the top three in Box-Toppers season player rankings earned Player of the Game honors—Angels pitcher Shohei Ohtani (ranked second) and Marlins pitcher Sandy Alcantara (ranked third). Both maintained their rankings. Plus, Brewers pitcher Brandon Woodruff rises to 10th in player rankings after earning National League Player of the Game honors Saturday.
Player of the Day—Hill struck out 11 over seven scoreless innings, allowing three hits and one walk, in the 5-1 win over the Rays.
Hill earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 4.0 for the season, 179th among all players and 59th among American League pitchers.
National League Player of the Day—Brewers pitcher Brandon Woodruff struck out 10 over six scoreless innings, allowing four hits and one walk, in the 7-0 win over the Cubs. Woodruff did not earn the win, picking up a no-decision, because the game was in a scoreless tie when he exited.
Woodruff earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day, giving him 14.1 for the season, 10th among all players and sixth among NL pitchers.
National League Batter of the Day—Nolan Arenado of the Cardinals homered, doubled and went 4-for-4, scoring once and driving in two runs, in the 6-5 win over the Braves.
Arenado earns 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being NL Batter of the Day, giving him 7.0 for the season, seventh among NL batters.
American League Batter of the Day—Eric Haase of the Tigers homered and went 2-for-3, scoring once and driving in three runs, in the 11-2 win over the Rangers.
Rankings—Two of the top three in Box-Toppers season player rankings earned Player of the Game honors and maintained their spot in player rankings:
Angels pitcher Shohei Ohtani (7IP 2H 0R BB 9K W in the 2-0 win over the Blue Jays) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 19.0 for the season, maintaining second place overall and among AL pitchers, behind overall leader Justin Verlander of the Astros (21.0).
Marlins pitcher Sandy Alcantara (CG 6H R 2BB 10K W in the 2-1 win over the Dodgers) earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 18.1 for the season, maintaining third place overall and extending his lead among NL pitchers, ahead of second-place Julio Urias of the Dodgers (15.4).
Debut—Two players made their Box-Toppers debut Saturday, each with their first career Player of the Game honor:
Athletics pitcher Adam Oller (8IP H 0R BB 3K ND in the 3-2, 11-inning win over the Yankees) made his Major League debut April 12 and was playing in his 17th career game.
TJ Friedl of the Reds (HR 3-4 R 3BI in the 6-2 win over the Nationals) made his Major League debut Sept. 18, 2021, and was playing in his 54th career game.
