Orioles pitcher Dean Kremer is Friday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day.
Kremer pitched a couplete-game, four-hit shutout, striking out six and walking two, in the 6-0 win over the Astros.
Kremer earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, giving him 7.7 for the season, 80th among all players and 36th among American League pitchers.
National League Player of the Day—Cardinals pitcher Jose Quintana struck out six over 6 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing five hits and no walks, in the 11-0 win over the Dodgers.
Quintana earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day, giving him 11.4 for the season, 38th among all players and 17th among NL pitchers.
Quintana becomes the 49th player to reach 10.0 Box-Toppers points in 2022. This is his fifth season with 10.0 or more points. His best season was 2017 with the White Sox and Cubs when he had 15.0 points, ending the season ninth among NL pitchers. In 2021, Quintana earned 1.0 point with the Angels.
There are now as many players with 10.0 Box-Toppers points (49) as there were in 2021. Since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995, there have been as many as 67 players in season to reach 10.0 points (2001), as few as two (in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season) and as low as 32 in a regular-length season (1995, though that season was shortened from 162 to 144 games due to the players’ strike). Excluding the 2020 season, the average number players with 10.0 points in a season is 50.5.
There are currently only four batters who have reached 10.0 Box-Toppers points in 2022, compared to 45 pitchers. The fewest number of batters to reach 10.0 points in a full-length season is five in 2014, 2018 and 2021. There has been as many as 28 batters reaching 10.0 points in a season three times—1997, 1999 and 2000.
American League Batter of the Day—Randy Arozarena of the Rays hit a three-run homer and went 2-for-5, scoring once and driving in six runs, in the 10-6 win over the Blue Jays.
This is the second straight day Arozarena earned AL Batter of the Day honors, after doing it Thursday (2-2B 3-4 2R 2BI in the 10-5 win over the Blue Jays).
Arozarena earns 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day, has earned 3.0 total points in the past two days and now has 6.0 for the season, 17th among AL batters.
National League Batter of the Day—Eduardo Escobar of the Mets hit a grand slam and went 1-for-5, scoring twice and driving in four runs, in the 9-2 win over the Athletics.
