Notable—Red Sox pitcher James Paxton earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point as Player of the Game Tuesday after earning no points for three straight seasons.

Paxton (7IP 6H 2R 2BB 9K W in the 5-4 win over the Guardians) last earned Player of the Game honors Sept. 21, 2019, with the Yankees.

NEW: Inbox notification of each post!

Paxton was out with injury, recovering from surgeries, including Tommy John surgery in 2021, limiting his appearances in 2020 and 2021 and not pitching at all in 2022. He had 0.0 points in each of those three seasons.

This came after three seasons in which Paxton was among the top 10 AL pitchers:

  • 2017—13.7 Box-Toppers points with the Mariners, seventh among AL pitchers.

  • 2018—17.0 Box-Toppers points with the Mariners, ninth among AL pitchers.

  • 2019—14.1 Box-Toppers points with the Yankees, eighth among AL pitchers.

Scoring—Gausman earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Luzardo earns 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day. Peterson and Wade each earn 1.5 points for being their league’s Batter of the Day. All of Tuesday’s other Player of the Game winners (listed in the chart below) earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point.

About Box-Toppers—Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
