About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
Ohtani also leads American League pitchers and batters. Also this week, Nolan Gorman of the Cardinals rises to lead National League batters in Box-Toppers points and Spencer Strider of the Braves maintains his lead among NL pitchers for the second week.
Ohtani
Ohtani has 13.9 Box-Toppers points to maintain his lead among all players, earning no points since the All-Star break last week. He leads over second-place player, Braves pitcher Spencer Strider (12.7 points). Ohtani also leads over second-place AL pitcher Chris Bassitt of the Blue Jays (12.4), who is third overall.
Ohtani also leads AL batters for the ninth straight week, ahead of Aaron Judge of the Yankees (7.5 points).
Ohtani has earned Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors 12 times in 2023—six as a designated hitter and six as a starting pitcher. He’s earned 7.2 of his Box-Toppers points as a batter and 6.7 as a starting pitcher. He is the only player to qualify to rank among both pitchers and batters in Box-Toppers rankings because he’s earned more than 25 percent of his Player of the Game honors in both categories.
In both 2021 and 2022, Ohtani spent periods of both seasons ranked among batters but finished both years ranked only as a starting pitcher because he earned such an overwhelming majority of his Player of the Game honors as a pitcher.
By themselves, Ohtani’s 7.2 points as a batter would rank third among AL batters and his 6.7 points as a pitcher would rank 22nd among AL pitchers.
National League batters
Nolan Gorman of the Cardinals rises to lead the category with 7.5 Box-Toppers points, passing last week’s leader Ronald Acuna Jr. of the Braves, who falls to third place with 6.0 points. Gorman ranks ahead of second-place NL batter Christian Yelich of the Brewers (6.5 points).
Gorman ranks 29th overall.
National League pitchers
Braves pitcher Spencer Strider leads for the second week with 12.7 Box-Toppers points, picking up 1.0 point in the past week. He ranks ahead of second-place NL pitcher Corbin Burnes of the Brewers (11.7 points).
Strider ranks second overall.

About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
