About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
Strider continues to lead National League pitchers, while Ohtani continues to lead both American League batters and pitchers. Also, Ronald Acuna Jr. of the Braves continues to lead NL batters in Box-Toppers player rankings.
Strider leads
Strider took the Box-Toppers season player rankings lead Wednesday with 20.1 Box-Toppers points in 2023, passing Ohtani’s 19.4. Ohtani falls to second place overall.
Strider leads NL pitchers ahead of Freddy Peralta of the Brewers (17.7 points).
This is the second time Strider has led players this season. Strider took the lead for one day Aug. 25, but Ohtani passed him the next day, holding the lead until Wednesday.
Ohtani leads AL pitchers and batters
Ohtani had led all players for 12 straight weeks before losing the overall lead this week to Strider.
He still leads AL pitchers, ahead of Chris Bassitt of the Blue Jays (17.1) and leads AL batters ahead of Kyle Tucker of the Astros (12.5.). Ohtani has led AL pitchers in 13 straight weekly reports. He has led AL batters in 17 straight weekly reports.
Ohtani has earned exactly half his points as a pitcher (9.7) and half as a batter (9.7). His pitching season was shut down when it was learned in late August he had a ligament tear in his pitching elbow. Ohtani missed his 10th straight game as a batter Wednesday (the Angels were idle Thursday)—his longest absence at the plate this season—due to a strained right oblique. However, he is not on the injured list and is theoretically eligible to return at any time.
While Box-Toppers adds all of Ohtani’s points together and counts the overall total when ranking him as an AL pitcher and an AL batter, if they are separated, here is how Ohtani would rank:
His 9.7 points as a batter would rank third among AL batters.
His 9.7 points as a pitcher would rank 17th among AL pitchers.
National League batters
Zac Gallen @Dbacks rises this week to lead NL pitchers in Box-Toppers points over 2022-23:
— Box-Toppers (@BoxToppers) September 15, 2023
1—Gallen 34.4 (18.7 in ’22, 15.7 in ’23)
2—Spencer Strider @Braves 33.5 (13.4 in ’22, 20.1 in ’23)
3—Julio Urias @Dodgers 30.4
4—Zack Wheeler @Phillies 28.1
5—Sandy Alcantara @Marlins 28.1
Ronald Acuna Jr. of the Braves leads the category for the third week with 10.7 Box-Toppers points, picking up no points in the past week. He leads over second-place NL batter Pete Alonso of the Mets (10.5).
Acuna ranks 32nd among all players.
Acuna’s current 10.7 point total would equal the lowest Box-Toppers point to lead a league category in a regular-length season. In 2016, Nolan Arenado of the Rockies led NL batters with 10.7 points, the lowest total to lead any category in a regular-length season since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995.

About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
