Andrew Navigato of the Tigers is Box-Toppers Player of the Day in Thursday’s spring training games.
Navigato doubled and went 2-for-2, scoring twice and driving in three runs, in the 11-6 win over the Yankees.
Navigato would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day if this were a regular season game. Because it’s a preseason exhibition game, no Box-Toppers points are awarded.
Navigato, 25, has yet to make his regular season Major League debut and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.
National League Player of the Day
Mets pitcher Jose Quintana struck out six over three innings, allowing one run, four hits and no walks, in the 3-1 win over the Nationals. Quintana did not earn the win, picking up a no-decision, because the Mets trailed when he exited.
Quintana would have earned 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day if this were a regular season game.
Quintana earned 0.0 Box-Toppers points in 2023 with the Mets, playing in 13 games. However, 2022 was his best season, earning 11.4 Box-Toppers points with the Pirates and Cardinals, 18th among NL pitchers, making 32 total starts. Quintana has 83.1 career points, earned since 2012, 10th among active NL pitchers.
National League Batter of the Day
Brewer Hicklen of the Brewers (that can’t be his real name, no wait—Charles Brewer Hicklen—yes it is) homered and went 2-for-2, scoring twice and driving in one run, in the 8-2 win over the White Sox.
Hicklen would have earned 1.5 Box-Toppers points for being NL Batter of the Day if this were a regular season game.
Hicklen has played in six regular season Major League games, all in 2022 with the Royals, but did not win Player of the Game honors in any of them and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.
American League Batter of the Day
There is no separate AL Batter of the Day for Thursday’s because the overall Player of the Day is AL batter Andrew Navigato.
Thursday’s games
In Thursday’s 10 completed spring training games featuring matchups between two Major League teams, there were four Player of the Game winners who had previously earned Box-Toppers points in regular season games.
Most notably, Bryan Woo of the Mariners (2.2IP 0H 0R BB 3K W in the 5-0 win over the Angels), had the most 2023 Box-Toppers points among Thursday’s Player of the Game winners. Woo earned 8.7 Box-Toppers points in 2023, 38th among AL pitchers.
In five of Thursday’s games, the Player of the Game winner was a player who has yet to earn Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in the regular season and so has 0.0 career Box-Toppers points.
One game ended in a tie (Cubs vs. Reds) and so no Player of the Game honor was awarded.
Scoring
No Box-Toppers points are awarded in exhibition games. Were it a regular season day, Navigato would have earned 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day and Quintana would have earned 1.7 points for being NL Player of the Day. Hicklen would have earned 1.5 points for being NL Batter of the Day. All of Thursday’s other Players of the Game (listed in the chart) would have earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
