About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
Yankees pitcher Luis Gil continues his lead in Box-Toppers season player rankings, topping the list for the fourth straight week.
Meanwhile, there are two new category leaders this week: Zack Wheeler of the Phillies rises to lead National League pitchers and Aaron Judge rises to lead American League batters. Meanwhile, Brenton Doyle of the Rockies continues to lead NL batters and Gil continues his lead among AL pitchers.
Gil leads
Gil has 13.4 Box-Toppers points to lead all players, picking up no points in the past week. He leads over second-place player, Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler (9.7). He leads second-place AL pitcher Tanner Houck of the Red Sox (9.7), who is fourth overall.
National League pitchers
Zack Wheeler of the Phillies rises to lead NL pitchers this week, passing last week’s leader, Chris Sale of the Braves, who falls to second place.
Wheeler and Sale both have 9.7 Box-Toppers points on the season, but Wheeler ranks ahead because he has more 2023 points—14.7 vs. 8.7.
Wheeler ranks second overall.
American League batters
Aaron Judge of the Yankees rises to lead AL batters this week with 8.5 Box-Toppers points, passing last week’s leader, Juan Soto of the Yankees (7.0 points), who falls to second place.
Judge ranks 13th among all players.

Box-Toppers almanac
While pitchers still won most of this week’s Player of the Game honors, batters gained in their overall share of Player of the Game honors won for the season.
Pitchers won Player of the Game honors in 56 of the 92 games played (60.9 percent), while batters won in 36 (39.1 percent). However, batters’ overall share of Player of the Game honors won increased from 33.0 percent last week to 33.6 percent this week (346 times in 1,030 total games). Pitchers have won 684 times or 66.4 percent.
Batters also made slight overall gains in share of Box-Toppers points won but are still on pace to have their lowest share of points in the 30 seasons of Box-Toppers tracking.
Batters have won 34.2 percent of all points (419.8 out of 1,227.6), while pitchers have won 65.8 percent (807.8 points). Batters increased their overall share from 33.8 percent last week.
The all-time low share of points for batters in a single season is 38.1 percent in 2022. (Batters had 40.7 percent in 2023.) While batters have struggled to reach parity with pitchers in recent seasons, it wasn’t always this way: From 1995 to 2009, batters generally won half or more of all Box-Toppers points each season. But their share of points dropped precipitously after 2009 and is on track to plummet to a record-shattering low in 2024.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
