About Box-Toppers’ team abbreviations
Padres pitcher Nick Pivetta leads Box-Toppers weekly season player rankings report.
Pivetta also led player rankings last week but briefly lost that lead Saturday, when Red Sox pitcher Garrett Crochet took the top spot before Pivetta regained it Tuesday.
Pivetta also leads National League pitchers while Crochet rises to lead American League pitchers. Alex Bregman of the Red Sox continues to lead AL batters and Pete Alonso of the Mets continues to lead NL batters.
Pivetta leads
Pivetta has 6.0 Box-Toppers points in 2025, picking up 1.0 point in the past week. He leads over second-place player, Crochet (5.4 points) and leads NL pitchers ahead of second-place Andrew Heaney of the Pirates (5.0 points).
American League pitchers
Red Sox pitcher Garrett Crochet rises from third to first place among AL pitchers this week with 5.4 Box-Toppers points, passing last week’s leader, Logan Gilbert of the Mariners (4.7 points), who falls to second place. Crochet ranks second overall.
National League batters
Pete Alonso of the Mets continues to lead with 4.5 Box-Toppers points, seventh place overall, picking up no points in the past week. He leads ahead of second-place NL batter Carson Kelly of the Cubs, who rises from third to second place with 4.5 points. (Though Alonso and Kelly both have 4.5 points in 2025, Alonso ranks higher because he has more 2024 points—5.0 vs. 1.5.)
American League batters
Alex Bregman of the Red Sox continues to lead with 3.7 Box-Toppers points, picking up no points in the past week. He ranks ahead of second-place Aaron Judge of the Yankees (3.5 points). Bregman ranks 15th overall.
Box-Toppers almanac
Pitchers won Player of the Game honors in 57 of the 91 games played this week (62.6 percent) with batters winning in 34 (37.4 percent). That increased batters’ share of Player of the Game honors for the season from 36.6 percent last week to 36.8 percent this week (138 wins in 375 total games), with pitchers slipping to 63.2 percent (237 wins).
Pitchers have won 63.1 percent of all Box-Toppers points awarded in 2025 with batters earning 36.9 percent. Those numbers held steady from last week. Though it’s early in the season, that’s already behind the record-low share of points earned by batters in a single season—37.2 percent in 2024.
While batters have struggled to reach parity with pitchers in recent seasons, it wasn’t always this way: From 1995 to 2009, batters generally won half or more of all Box-Toppers points each season. But their share of points dropped precipitously after 2009.
About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
Box-Toppers strives for accuracy. See a mistake in a post? A wrong name, wrong team, grammar error, spelling goof, etc.? Thanks for pointing it out! Contact Box-Toppers here. Let's fix it and make it right.
