White Sox pitcher Shane Smith is Thursday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day.
Also Thursday, Salvador Perez of the Royals wins Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in both games of a doubleheader, becoming the 14th player since Box-Toppers tracking began in 1995 to achieve that feat.
Player of the Day
Smith struck out seven over five scoreless innings, allowing four hits and one walk, in the 3-0, seven-inning win over the Twins.
Smith earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, his first points of the season, and is 90th in season player rankings, 29th among American League pitchers.
This was Smith’s Box-Toppers debut, his first career Player of the Game honor. Smith made his Major League debut April 1 and was playing in his fifth career game.
National League Player of the Day
Giants pitcher Tyler Rogers struck out three in one scoreless inning, allowing one hit and no walks, in the 6-5 win over the Brewers. Rogers pitched the top of the eighth inning, earning the win after the Giants took the lead in the bottom of the eighth.
Rogers earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being NL Player of the Day, his first points of the season, and is 42nd among NL pitchers.
Salvador Perez
Salvador Perez of the Royals won Box-Toppers Player of the Game honors in both games of a doubleheader Thursday, earning a total of 2.5 Box-Toppers points for the day. He earned 1.0 Box-Toppers point as Player of the Game in Game 1 and 1.5 points as AL Batter of the Day in Game 2.
Doubleheader Players of the Game

Links go to that day’s Daily Scorecard on Box-Toppers.com. While tracking began in 1995, the website began in 2013.
In Game 1, the Royals beat the Rockies 7-4 and Perez hit two doubles and went 2-for-4, scoring twice and driving in two runs.
In Game 2, the Royals beat the Rockies 6-2 an Perez hit two doubles and went 3-for-4, scoring once and driving in two runs.
Perez had a Box-Toppers game score of +2.0 in both games but his Game 2 beat his Game 1 to win AL Batter of the Day honors on a tiebreaker because he had more hits in that game—three vs. two.
These were Perez’s first Player of the Game honors of 2025 and his 2.5 Box-Toppers points for the season is seventh among AL batters.
It is just the 14th time in more than 30 seasons of Box-Toppers tracking that a player has won Player of the Game honors in both games of a doubleheader. It was first done by Albert Belle of the White Sox in 1998 and most recently done in 2023 by Ezequiel Tovar of the Rockies. It has happened only four times in the past 10 years and only the third time now in the decade of the 2020s. Then-Angels pitcher Shohei Ohtani did it July 27, 2023, winning 2.0 points as Player of the Day in a game he pitched and then winning 1.5 points as AL Batter of the Day in a game in which he served as designated hitter. His 3.5 points are the most earned by one player in a single day.
National League Batter of the Day
There is no separate NL Batter of the Day for Thursday because no NL batter won Player of the Game honors in the nine games completed.

About Box-Toppers
Box-Toppers tracks who most helps their team win the most games. Using standard box score statistics, Box-Toppers uses a simple formula to determine a Player of the Game for each Major League Baseball game played. That player is the person who contributed most to his team’s win. In regular season games, players earn 1.0 Box-Toppers point for being named Player of the Game and can earn bonus points for being Player of the Day or top player or batter in their league for the day.
