Pirates pitcher Andrew Heaney is Sunday’s Box-Toppers Player of the Day.

Also Sunday, two Red Sox batters rise into Box-Toppers season player rankings top 10 list after both earn Player of the Game honors in a doubleheader. Alex Bregman rises to fifth place (earning American League Player of the Day honors) and Wilyer Abreu rises to sixth.

Heaney struck out 10 over seven innings, allowing one run, five hits and one walk, in the 5-4 11-inning win over the Yankees. Heaney did not earn the win, picking up a no-decision, because the Yankees tied the game after he exited.

Heaney earns 2.0 Box-Toppers points for being Player of the Day, his first points of the season and is 14th in season player rankings. Heaney is one of 20 players with 2.0 Box-Toppers points in 2025 and ranks eighth among them based on his 2024 point total. Heaney earned 9.0 points in 2024 with the Rangers, 33rd among AL pitchers.

American League Player of the Day

Alex Bregman of the Red Sox hit a three-run homer, two doubles and went 4-for-5, scoring twice and driving in six runs, in the 18-7 win over the Cardinals.

Bregman earns 1.7 Box-Toppers points for being AL Player of the Day, giving him 2.7 for the season, fifth among all players and third among AL batters, behind Aaron Judge of the Yankees (3.0) and Tyler O'Neill of the Orioles (3.0).

Bregman previously earned Player of the Game honors Thursday, April 3. He is one of three players with 2.7 Box-Toppers points in 2025 but ranks third among them because he has the fewest 2024 Box-Toppers points (1.5). The other players with 2.7 points in 2025 are Phillies Zack Wheeler (21.4 points in 2024) and Phillies pitcher Jesús Luzardo (2.0 points in 2024).

(Bregman has earned Box-Toppers points in 10 straight seasons, a feat he achieved April 3, which I missed at the time but have since added to that day’s post.)

American League Player of the Day is Alex Bregman of the Red Sox.

National League Batter of the Day

Jackson Chourio of the Brewers hit two home runs, including a three-run homer, in the 8-2 win over the Reds. Chourio also hit a sacrifice fly and went 2-for-3, scoring twice and driving in five runs.

American League Batter of the Day

There is no separate AL Batter of the Day for Sunday because the overall AL Player of the Day is batter Alex Bregman.

Nestor Cortes #Brewers goes on 15-day injured list with a flexor strain in his throwing elbow, a similar injury he had in September 2024 with #Yankees. Cortes has 17.4 Box-Toppers points over 2024-25 (including 2.0 in 2025), 6th-most among all players.

Blake Snell #Dodgers goes on 15-day injured list with inflammation in his throwing shoulder, his 10th IL trip in 10 seasons. Snell earned 15.7 Box-Toppers points in 2024 with #SFGiants, 5th among NL pitchers. His 58.6 B-T points over 2020-25 is 6th among NL pitchers.

Rankings

Wilyer Abreu of the Red Sox rises to sixth place in Box-Toppers season player rankings after earning Player of the Game honors Sunday.

Abreu hit a 10th-inning, walk-off single, driving in the winning run, in the 5-4, 10-inning win over the Cardinals, in the first game of a doubleheader. Abreu went 1-for-1, scoring once and driving in one run.

Abreu earns 1.0 Box-Toppers point, giving him 2.5 for the season, sixth overall and fourth among AL batters.

Previously, Abreu earned 1.5 Box-Toppers points as AL Batter of the Day on March 27.

Debut

Two players made their Box-Toppers debut Sunday, each with their first career Player of the Game honor:

  • Angels pitcher Ryan Zeferjahn (1IP H 0R 0BB 3K W in the 6-2 win over the Guardians) made his Major League debut Aug. 25, 2024, and was playing in his 17th career game.

  • Tigers pitcher Brenan Hanifee (2IP 0H 0R 0BB 0K ND in the 4-3 win over the White Sox) made his Major League debut Sept. 21, 2023, and was playing in his 28th career game.
